What one piece of advice would you give a new Council candidate?

A wonderful new Liberal Democrat council candidate asked me the other week for some advice.

I thought that the most important thing she could do would be to join ALDC. The Association of Liberal Democrat Councillors and Campaigners has a veritable treasure trove of resources to help your campaign. I’ve known many a councillor over the years who did what they said and won. Winning is not guaranteed, of course, but following their ideas makes it more likely.

It’s also worth going to their training events, particularly their Kickstart weekend when you will get individualised support for your team and your area. There are three this year. The first is in Scotland on 2nd July, then the main south of the border events take place from 2-4 September and from 25-27 November.

I see ALDC very much as a professional support organisation – a decent one that is constantly looking to enhance the skills of its members.

All it will cost you is £3.41 per month. It’s well worth it.  You can join here

ALDC Awards: One week to go

With only one week left to go, ALDC are still looking for nominations for the best Liberal Democrat campaigners to be recognised at our Awards event in September.

It’s a great opportunity for ALDC to highlight the best campaigning teams in our party and give them the recognition they deserve. Last year’s overall winners were Kirklees whose campaign for 2014 started as soon as the results were announced in 2012.

Each year, ALDC recognises the outstanding work of local Focus teams through our Campaigner Awards. This year, our categories are:

  • Best Member engagement campaign
  • Best Literature
  • Best Community Campaign
  • Best By-Election campaign
  • Best Digital Campaign
  • Best Ward Campaign
  • Overall Campaigner Awards Winner

To submit your nomination with relevant examples of artwork and photos, please fill in the linked form and send any supporting material to [email protected].

ALDC by-election report, 11 December 2014 – a trio of Liberal Democrat wins

ALDC Master Logo (for screen)Eleven principal council by-elections were held across Britain yesterday. The two contests in Aylesbury Vale resulted in two Liberal Democrat wins. Peter Agoro was victorious in Southcourt ward, polling 42.3% to secure a comfortable majority of 317 votes as UKIP finished second. Labour, who were defending the seat, saw their vote share drop by 12.2% in finishing third. There was more good news as Anders Christensen held for the Liberal Democrats in Gatehouse, winning with a slender majority of 28 ahead of the UKIP candidate.  These two victories see the party’s representation on Aylesbury Vale DC increase to 17 councillors.
