Two Tory councillors quit following allegations over photos of young boys

The Kensington & Chelsea Chronicle reports:

Two Tory councillors have resigned after it emerged inappropriate emails had been sent using the council’s email system.

Former Kensington and Chelsea mayor Councillor Barry Phelps fired off a series of emails to Councillor Mark Daley, displaying black and white images of young boys with sexually suggestive captions added by Mr Phelps…

The emails were reported to the council by Justin Downes, leader of the Residents First campaign group, who had been alerted by a concerned resident.

“These were innocent images and Councillor Phelps has created sexual overtones to them,” Mr Downes said…

Electoral administration isn’t going quite as well as it should…

First, the good news: all the reports so far indicated a strong surge in people registering just before the deadline earlier this month. The Independent has some further figures to add to earlier reports. Thankfully, Havering Council with its hostile approach to people using the Electoral Commission’s website seems to be very much the exception. Whilst its electoral division has called “ridiculous” the number of people registering at the last moment, other councils have welcomed the surge of interest rather than criticised it.

First Lib Dem win in Kensington & Chelsea – congratulations Councillor Caruana!

Carol Caruana signs in as councillorFantastic news from yesterday’s Colville by-election in the London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (unusually held on a Wednesday):

Carol Caruana is the first elected Liberal Democrat in the borough – with more votes than the Tories and Labour combined.

The results from ALDC are as follows:

Carol Caruana LD 634 (46.9; +16.8)
Con 330 (24.4; +3.2)
Lab 300 (22.2; -19.2)
Green 77 (5.7; -1.5)
Ind 10 (0.7; +0.7)
Majority 304
Turnout 24.0%
Lib Dem gain from Lab
Percentage change is from 2006
