Fantastic news from yesterday’s Colville by-election in the London Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (unusually held on a Wednesday):
Carol Caruana is the first elected Liberal Democrat in the borough – with more votes than the Tories and Labour combined.
The results from ALDC are as follows:
Carol Caruana LD 634 (46.9; +16.8)
Con 330 (24.4; +3.2)
Lab 300 (22.2; -19.2)
Green 77 (5.7; -1.5)
Ind 10 (0.7; +0.7)
Majority 304
Turnout 24.0%
Lib Dem gain from Lab
Percentage change is from 2006
Congratulations to agent Robin Meltzer, who ran a cracking campaign and mobilised members of both Westminster and European Parliaments, as well as grassroots campaigners from all over to go and help in Colville.
But especially, congratulations to new Councillor Carol, who has campaigned and worked for local people for years. Here’s what she said last night:
Colville ward is a stunningly exciting place; how could it not be with somewhere as iconic as Portobello Road? A place like this demands councillors who believe in local communities and listen to the concerns of both traders and residents. That is how the Liberal Democrats have built their success in local government across the country and I want to offer that here.

This truly is a tremendous result, in Kensington and Chelsea, of all places.
Carol is immensely popular with anyone who has had any dealings with her in her work in the Conference Office in Cowley St, and I’m sure will bring the same excellent service to the people she now represents.
Great result. The numbers are surprisingly low, though. They must have very small wards in K&C.
Nice to see us beating the Tories on their home turf.
Now lets see if we can repeat it in another by-election taking place today.
Brilliant result. Well done Carol and all her helpers.
Fantastic result, Carol is without a doubt a worker and a winner!
I am sure the campaign will go on as she seeks re selection next May! Well done Carol
meant re-election
Fantastic. Many congratulations to Carol, Robin and their team.
Given the ward, those percentages are horrific for Labour, those numbers are not too good for democracy either.
How fantastic – congarts to everyone involved. How lovely to know that all the work we all did over many years has finally come to fruition. Here’s to many more wins!
