It’s been a fascinating week, hasn’t it? The death of Baroness Thatcher has been a reminder of a rather different political world, one of confrontation and ideology, of a sort that we don’t apparently see now. And, interestingly, most of the key players in the Thatcher administrations are quietly passing their days in the Lords, which made Wednesday’s tributes there rather more personal than those in the Commons.
And whilst the week has been dominated by her passing, and the reflections on her influence over our nation and its politics, there has been quite a lot going on, even though Parliament has been otherwise in recess.
In Europe, the talk is of Cyprus, and now Slovenia and Portugal, and we’ll be looking at that during the day.
Closer to home, there was a successful Liberal Democrat defence in Luton on Wednesday night, and we’ll be reporting on that and on by-elections in Todmorden and Darlington (there is no Liberal Democrat candidate in Independent-run Pembrokeshire).
There will also be a very brief Lords report. Yes, I know that Parliament is in recess, but that doesn”t necessarily mean that the place is deserted…
We are, I have to admit, otherwise a bit short of content for your delectation and delight – you’re all out campaigning for the County elections, aren’t you? But if you do have something for us, do get in touch, won’t you?
