What the papers are saying

Today’s papers are dominated by the news that London’s Metropolitan Police force has been found guilty of endangering the public over the fatal shooting of innocent Brazilian Jean Charles de Menezes. Lib Dem shadow home secretary (and leadership contender), Nick Clegg, is widely quoted calling for the resignation of Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair: “This guilty verdict makes it unavoidable that Ian Blair should take responsibility on behalf of his whole organisation and resign.”

The Ham & High newspaper meanwhile focuses on how the leadership race is playing out among the local Lib Dems: MP for Hornsey and Wood Green Lynne Featherstone is heading up Mr Huhne’s campaign, while Ed Fordham, parliamentary candidate for Hampstead and Kilburn, is running Mr Clegg’s.

Lynne is quoted saying: “I couldn’t have wished for a nicer opponent than Ed. He is a wonderful parliamentary candidate and would be a fantastic campaign chairman, so it has made me a little concerned – but good competition is healthy for a democracy. I think the overarching message is that whoever wins, it will be great for the Lib Dems.”

And, finally, the Wednesday night leadership hustings is reviewed by Nicholas Blincoe for GuardianUnlimited’s Comment Is Free here (it seems like he could do with washing out his ears), and the BBC’s Guto Harri here.
