  • I am puzzled at how the Republican right has managed to let power slip out of their hands like this. Indeed, it seems so unlikely that they would abandon their hegemony of the past seven years and slink off into the night that I suspect some hidden motives. At the moment McCain seems to be the most likely victor in November so perhaps the ideologues believe that they can rebuild their power bases behind the scenes of a McCain presidency which, in my view, would be rather like that of Jimmy Carter’s – one term, decent, and muddled. Conversely, if Clinton wins they may be calculating that there would be another window of opportunity for an ideological year zero a la Gingrich, the recapture of their lost power in the states at mid-term, and the final implementation of democratic fascism in 2012. Or am I just paranoid?
