Miriam Gonzalez Durantez, who works as an international lawyer and has barely been seen on the campaign trail, spoke out in a documentary about her husband.

“It is a bit frivolous, there is an element of frivolity obviously on knowing where your clothes come from,” she told ITV’s Tonight programme. “I wouldn’t look on it as whether it’s frivolous in relation to the women – I think (it) is frivolous in relation to the voters. I think that the voters deserve better, deserve more focus on the policies and less on the clothes.”

Miriam might have had in mind yesterday’s execrable Daily Mail story, perhaps the most demeaningly trivial article ever published in a national newspaper, The Prime Minister’s wife exposes her rather unsightly toes during a visit to Temple. No wonder the Daily Mail couldn’t find a journalist willing to put their name to such shit.

  MPs’ expenses: Politicians granted legal aid (Telegraph)

Three politicians accused of fiddling their expenses have won a bid to get the public to pick up their legal bill. Court officials said that the trio of Labour MPs will receive taxpayer-funded legal aid. … The cost of preparing their defence and of their legal representatives is likely to run into six figures, depending on the length of the trial.

Nick Clegg and Chris Huhne were among those to denounce it:

Chris Huhne said: “It’s absurd that well-to-do MPs on double national average earnings and extra expenses to boot should be entitled to legal aid when so many more deserving cases have been refused.”

While Nick added: “People will be dismayed that on the last day of this corrupt Parliament, these MPs are using taxpayers’ money to try to get themselves out of these allegations.”

• Ditched Lib Dem trio to stand as independents (Waltham Forest Guardian)

THREE senior Liberal Democrat councillors ditched as candidates by their party will stand on May 6 as independents, it has been confirmed. Lib Dem group leader John Macklin, cabinet member for environment Bob Belam and chief whip Bob Carey, were all deselected as candidates for Chapel End ward in Walthamstow following an internal dispute. The three will now stand for election as independents, with no party allegiance.
