This week, there were two principal council by-elections. Only one contest had a Liberal Democrat candidate.
In the seaside town of Clevedon, where Labour was attempting to defend this seat, they managed to hold, albeit with an unconvincing margin against Reform. Thank you to Jude Chambers and the local Liberal Democrat team for flying the flag.
North Somerset Council, Clevedon South
Labour: 350 (29.0%, –25.4)
Reform UK: 334 (27.7%, new)
Conservative: 224 (18.6%, –27.0)
Green Party: 197 (16.3%, new)
Liberal Democrats (Jude Chambers): 100 (8.3%, new)
Labour HOLD

There was no Liberal Democrat candidate in the Welsh contest. Here are the results:

Why no candidate on Ynys Môn?
There is a Welsh general election in a hundred days and we’re not fighting by-elections in the big three-member wards? Do we have a Senedd candidate in place for this seat?
@ Ynys Mon Man It may or may not be a pity, but it seems like the days of Megan Lloyd George et al on Ynys Mon are long gone, Ynys.
Maybe a fresh start after a period of reflection as per ed Davey’s unaccepted advice is called for ?
Where’s the result for the Netherthong by-election in the Colne Valley (for so many years part of Richard Wainwright M.P.’s constituency) ?
I’d be surprised if any voter in Ynys Gyni has ever seen an asylum seeker. Odd result indeed. Wonder what May will bring.
Of the 17 contests this Year 6 were taken by Reform & 5 by The Libdems, roughly in line with the pattern over the last Year. Unfortunately the results last May were very different with Reform way ahead.
@David Raw. Parish councils don’t usually get a mention but
Reform UK: 156 (28.2%, new)
Labour: 117 (21.2%, –29.5)
Green Party: 114 (20.6%, new)
Conservative: 110 (20.0%, –29.3)
Liberal Democrats (Howard Cohen): 55 (10.0%, new)
Reform UK GAIN from Conservative
Turnout: 30.38%
It’s bad news that Reform gains from anyone; but if Labour is 21.2% down 29.5 and Con is 20% down 29.3 that suggests a previous result of Labour 50.7 Con 49.3 which would make it a gain from Labour. Good to see there are 30.6% of tolerably sensible people in the area, either way.
@DavidRaw, it’s very disappointing to get a Reform person elected to local politics in Huddersfield, and especially from a beautiful area such as Netherthong.
@ Big Tim. They weren’t “halcyon days”, Mr Tim. They were days when the party’s vision was of a politics for the whole of the UK , not just the most comfortable prosperous bits of it. Regionalism was a huge plank in Jo Grimond ‘s campaigns.
As for Michael, he was the very last person to regard himself as wonderful, but my goodness he was competent and well informed. If he was still around I’m sure he’d be telling you to have a look at the Chester-le-Street by-election and the Berwick by-election in the early 70’s. There is a world beyond the River Trent.
