ALDC’s by-election review – 7th March

A  quiet night of by-elections saw one by-election take place in Haddenham and Stone for Aylesbury Vale DC. The solitary election saw a big loss for the Conservatives to the Green’s who increased their vote share 34.6% to snatch the seat from the Tories. Jim Brown and the Aylesbury Vale Lib Dem team flew the flag well and took 333 votes increasing their vote share by 2.3% so a big thanks to Jim and the team.

Next week we have a busier week with 3 by-elections taking place with Lib Dem candidates standing in all. See below our list for next week and how you can help.

  • Again we see the continuing theme, which ever party or individual is seen as being the most likely to punish the Tories ( Labour seats tend to be the same, the people are searching for punishers for them too) receives peoples support.

In this case it was David Lyons of the Greens. Source

David Lyons went on to be runner-up to the Conservatives for the Bernwood county division, which includes Haddenham, in the 2017 Buckinghamshire county elections; he scored an impressive 31% to the Tories’ 47%.

This council is about to be abolished so I don’t think we can get much from this result, one or more of the Parties may have decided not to put much effort in.

  • We have also had a Tory Councillor on East Devon District Council and Exmouth Town Council leaving that party. Currently he is sitting as an Independent, but has joined the Lib Dems. He is a former Conservative Whip at EDDC, so is a prominent councillor. He has given his reasons for the switch as cuts to police numbers, and unfeeling treatment of benefit claimants.

  • It is too easy to ignore the fact that people are willing to vote for a candidate who seems willing to listen to them, to keep them informed. This was the basis of much Liberal / LibDem local government success. This is reasonable given the fact that there is little difference between the claimed policies of the various parties in our country.
Of course most people seem to believe that they cannot trust politicians because they say different things in elections than they actually do when they have a chance.
I wonder why they believe that?
