You may have thought that Labour today announced they were going ahead with Crossrail (the cross-London train route), hurrah all round.
Now, I’ve already pointed out the little problem Labour have with repeatedly making the same Crossrail announcement. But there’s another problem too.
You see, if you look into the details today’s announcement was for construction work to start in 2010 whilst after their last announcement that they were going ahead with the project the construction start date was 2009.
So today really amounted to, “we’re going to do what we already said we were going to do – but we’re delaying it (again).”

I’ll mark your card, it’s £60 billion, 60% of the cost…
Sorry, £6 billion of course…
Of course the real question is where is the money for this?
If the Comprehensive Spending Review tomorrow doesn’t clearly earmark funds, you can put this down to yet another bit of Labour spin. Its show us the money time tomorrow.
Friday’s announcement could have been (and was!) made any time in the last 20 years.
