Tsk tsk Mr Cameron:
The Tory chief yesterday ploughed through a pedestrian crossing, narrowly missing a Mercedes, and ditched safety gear. (Daily Mirror)
This is becoming really a rather regular occurrance, for as I wrote in March:
Can you guess who was caught cycling through a red light and without a helmet in 2007? And was then caught again cycling through a red light, with an eye-witness reporting “instead of apologising, his whole attitude was one of arrogance”? And then we have today’s news, complete with photos.
I do agree with David Cameron on one thing that he’s said mind you:
For persistent offenders, the public deserve a break from their behaviour (April 2006)

If he wants to risk his own head, what’s the problem?
This is petty finger pointing if I ever saw it. Cycling through red lights is not necessarily unsafe depending on the location for a start, and jesus is this the best you can come up with?
Look at the time on the “photographs”. What usually takes place on a Wednesday afternoon between 12:00 and 12:30?

You [cyclists] MUST obey all traffic signs and traffic light signals.

isn’t there more important issues to debate.
I don’t wear a helmet either – and there is good evidence from the univ of Bath that they do not help safety.
Ditched safety gear? You mean he rode without a helmet? Many of us do: it’s a lot more fun.
Are you suggesting that of all parties the Liberal Democrats should be in favour of compelling cyclists to wear helmets? If not, why mention it? If so, I’m off.
Repeatedly breaking the law, with a touch of arrogance thrown in? Nah, can’t see why that behaviour by someone who makes laws that other people have to obey matters 🙂
Nothing wrong, or even less safe, about riding without a helmet.
Tim: when I worked for the CTC I remember the evidence showed that was the case. The research ‘in favour’ of cycle helmets was funded by helmet manufacturers and supported by conservative ministers and civil servants who wrongly viewed cycling as a road safety problem. The robust research was equivocal.
Liberals should not be compelling people to do stuff like wear helmets while riding, and therefore be keeping traps shut when someone exercises a perfectly legal freedom. Now on disobeying the law, Cameron is fair game.
Iain: indeed. 47mph downhill wind through the hair today. No helmet. Yeeeehar.
Let’s attack Dave by all means but this is just laughable. You don’t have to wear a helmet on a bike – and their effectiveness in collisions is highly questionable.
Also, any fule kno that cycling is dangerous and that there can be occasional – that’s occasional, all you petrol heads – justification for going through a light if, for example, there is no one on a crossing, if the road is empty or if the driver of the penis extension or bus behind you is threatening your life.
Let’s go for Dave but lets find something grown up to have a go at him for, eh?
