Sad news of the death of another long-standing Liberal and then Liberal Democrat activist – Hugh Warren. For many years no Lib Dem by-election campaign has seemed complete until (a) Erlend was printing leaflets on the RISO and (b) Hugh had turned up to deliver them. I was amazed to discover that he was 89 when he died; his ability to keep going delivering leaflets put many people decardes younger than him to shame.

That’s a great shame. My favourite memory of Hugh was when I was delivering a training session in Hampshire and I mentioned my North Norfolk connection as I built up to convincing everyone to prioritise their poster campaign. Hugh piped up from the back of the room, right on queue, “Ah, Ive been to North Norfolk – it was covered in orange posters!” Perfect timing – I offered to pay him to come to all my training events. He will be much missed.
Very sad. I delivered or stuffed envelopes with Hugh on a number of occasions. On a couple of occasions he had trouble remembering my name and decided he needed some kind of symbolism to help him remember for the future. From then on whenever we met he would greet me with a cry of “Ah, dragon!” I will miss him.
Yes. Very sad to hear this news.
Hugh not only helped at all the various parliamentary by-elections I have worked on but was always incredibly positive and very supportive of my work in the region over the past few years.
He will be sadly missed by all of us.
Can’t imagine why, but I suddenly thought of Hugh last night for the first time in (literally) years. I knew him in the 1970s and early 80s when he was a (powerful, striding, sometimes erratic and difficult) force in the Aldershot constituency, after his retirement from various MoD scientific stuff. He loved the drama of elections, a good Liberal. Not at all surprised he made it to 89 – I thought he’d probably live for ever.
