Nick O’Shea named as Lib Dem Surrey Crime Commissioner candidate (BBC News)

Nick O’Shea is a businessman and former Mole Valley District Councillor. … Commissioners, to be elected in England and Wales in November, will oversee the work of police, which ministers say will make forces more accountable. … Police Crime Commissioners will replace police authorities in 41 areas in November.

Pete Levy is Lib Dem choice as Avon and Somerset police commissioner (BBC News)

A Bristol councillor and ex military policeman has been chosen as the Liberal Democrat candidate to become Avon and Somerset police commissioner. Somerset-born Pete Levy, who has represented the Horfield ward of Bristol since May 2010, will stand in the election for the new £85,000 post. Mr Levy is also a member of the Avon and Somerset Police Authority.

David Steel’s wife, Lady Steel, reveals why pink jaguar tattoo was the perfect 70th birthday present (Telegraph)

Lady Steel, 72, has revealed how she has sent shock waves through respectable social circles north of the border by flashing her pink spotted jaguar tattoo that she had done as a birthday present to herself. “It was very liberating because it was sort of proving that you’re never too old enough to do mad things,” Lady Steel told The Sunday Telegraph. “It’s not very obvious unless I give somebody a little showing. I do tend to flaunt it.”

Bristol approves city-wide 20mph limit (BBC News)

Plans to introduce a 20mph speed limit in most residential streets in Bristol over the next three years have been approved. The Liberal Democrat-run council said about 89% of those surveyed in pilot areas approved of 20mph zones. The council said the speed limit would make the roads less dangerous and encourage walking and cycling.

No Lib Dems left on Havant Borough Council after resignation of student (Portsmouth News)

ONE of Havant’s youngest ever councillors has resigned sparking a by-election in Leigh Park. Katie Ray, a trainee teacher, was just 20 when she stood for Battins ward for the Lib Dems in 2010. And when Faith Ponsonby lost her seat in May she was the only Lib Dem on the Conservative-led council. … Miss Ray was unavailable for comment but Mrs Ponsonby, from the local Lib Dem group, defended her record on attending meetings. She said: ‘We are very sad about it but she had been working so hard on her degree and now she is starting to apply for jobs and doesn’t know where she is going to be in the future.’

Former St Helens Council leader Brian Spencer pleads not guilty to ‘election night’ assault charges (St Helens Star)

BRIAN Spencer, a former Liberal Democrat leader of St Helens Council, appeared in court this morning to deny assaulting two Labour party members at May’s local election count. … Wearing a dark suit, he entered not guilty to both charges. … Mr Spencer, who led St Helens Council under a power sharing agreement with the Tories until Labour wrestled back control two years ago, was interviewed under police caution following the incident in May.
