I am not in the least bit racist having made lots of friends in may parts of the world as I lived abroad for 35 years.
But the very act of going on about one segment of our society is the very cause of racism. If we chose to divide and focus on “communities’ – as seems to be the trend – then we acerbate the emotions of others outside the “community”.
Same goes for any so called “community” or racial division in the world.
Lib Dems must be ONE, and not recognise this dicing up of peoples.
“I am not in the least bit racist but”
Those immortal words..
@Antony Watts – I really don’t know where to begin. How can you have missed the serious discussions around Black Lives Matter?
Do you really believe that equality and justice for all can be achieved by ignoring inequality and injustice wherever it occurs? Our fight as Liberal Democrats is to work for social justice, and that must involve a humble examination of the damage done to communities, and to sectors within communities, in the past.
Antony, the reason for racism really isn’t focussing on different communities. The reasons for racism lie deep within our psyches and that prejudice then becomes incorporated into the structures and values of our institutions. This is what the Liberal Democrats are trying to address and we won’t be put off by any placards saying white lives matter. We shall simply explain that white lives always matter, but in our society black lives are put at more risk as Covid is revealing and we have to put that right.
