We’re very thankful to Lib Dem councillor and blogger Joe Taylor who has produced an excellent cut-out-n-keep download’n’print guide to the American Elections for all those of us who are planning on staying up a goodly part of the night to see what the new dawn brings on the other side of the pond.
Joe’s guide is available for download here as a 1mb PDF file. Set out in UK time, it gives an hour-by-hour guide of what’s expected to happen in terms of polls closing, states declaring, and a handy list of which states are predicted to vote which way. There are also full colour maps and I’ve appended a Wikipedia list of how many electoral votes each state gets.
The action begins at 11pm UTC with result declarations in Indiana and Kentucky. US TV networks may be prepared to call the presidential results around 4am. Die-hards will be staying up till 6am to hear the results of the senatorial race in Alaska – will the Democrats get a supermajority by booting out disgraced Republican Senator Ted Stevens?
Many of us here at LDV will be staying up all night, or at least most of it, and given we know many of our readers stayed up for the debates, we’re expecting a number of you to keep us company through the night. We’re still working out the mechanics of our coverage here, but rest assured there’ll be something to see if you can drop on by.

Fantastic piece of work!!! Well done Joe!
Excellent 🙂
Complements the scorecard from http://www.livpac.com/ nicely as well
Very handy. Also worth a look is an hour by hour guide at Newsweek, by Nate Silver – the creator of FiveThirtyEight.com
No maps, but some in depth guidance on how to interpret the early results.
Thank you all 😀
If you spot any mistakes, let me know!
Well, I’m planning to stay up and watch. I’m already knackered though, and I’ve only been up 3 hours…
Huge swing to Obama in Dixville Notch and Hart’s location 🙂 First Democrat to win there since virtually ever.
Hart’s Location has voted for the eventual winner each time since beginning its early voting tradition (in 92 or 96 I think).
I think Dixville Notch might have voted for every republican since Barry Goldwater.
Winning both of those is a good sign, for different reasons…
I found a very good poll closing time diary at Swing State Project, which also has a list of all the key down-ballot races to watch for at which time.
DavidNYC has spotted a couple of problems with the data at thegreenpapers.com (which I also used).
Apparently North Carolina’s polls will all close at 1230 GMT as no polling locations seem to be exercising the alleged option to stay open an extra hour.
Similarly with North Dakota, every polling location seems to close no later than 7pm/8pm CST, or 7pm MST. So the polls there should all be closed by 0200 GMT.
And of course, on the night there’s the option for the various Secretaries of State to extend voting hours if there are huge queues – which is not out of the question in this election!
US poll closing times are crazy. Don’t Indiana’s polls close at 6pm local time.
Last time the Democrats won Dixville Notch. That well known Democrat triumph of 1968……
You need to balance that against the “UK formula one winner” prediction model.
In 1976 we had to wait up until Carter won Ohio and Mississippi before we could get to bed. The following morning on the tube I saw a seated passenger perusing the “Sun”. “BY JIMMY! IT LOOKS GOOD!” ran the headline. And further down the page: “US VOTES FOR SEXY CONGRESS – SCANDAL MEN BACK!” Even something as important as a US Presidential election gets trivialised in the “Sun”.
Sorry, anonymised again!
1972 was not only a terrible disappointment but a bore to watch. How 60% of the US electorate could vote for a physically repulsive, lying, corrupt, alcoholic war criminal eludes me, but then I am not an American.
All I can remember of the 1968 result is my parents jeering at the TV screen.
An excellent guide, many thanks – well worth the print out.
