I sort of guessed Mark would end up on Welsh Affairs. :p
Why is Julian Huppert not on Science & Technology?
Wot Darren asked. Surely a more natural placing?
*mumble* Bloody people of Oxford West and Abingdon…*mumble*
I’m sure I’ve seen Julian writing in various places that he doesn’t want to get typecast as only being a scientist. He’s involved with and on the national council of Liberty, which doesn’t seem out-of-step with Home Affairs.
Andy, Evan lost his seat from pure bad luck. Two strongly LD central Oxford wards went to Oxford East, two strongly Tory country wards went to Oxford West and Abingdon. Also, he had (as it turns out, false) expenses allegations levied on him and Oxford West and Abingdon was seen as being a safe seat so many LDs didn’t turn up or decided to vote Green to support an underdog. If we had 325 MPs in the commons overall then Evan would be one of them – LDs got the most votes overall in the two Oxford seats, it just happens that the most LD area is split across the two seats. If we had 1300 MPs rather than 650 overall then we would probably have Evan and Steve Goddard (I think that was the Oxford East LD candidate) and Labour and the Tories would each have one MP from the Oxford and Abingdon seats. Can’t really blame the voters here, except maybe for the last one 😛
Come to think of it the division of Oxford is actually completely stupid. The centre of the city has a lot to do with the north and west of the city (areas like Jericho and Summertown) but much of the east of the city (Cowley, Blackbird Leys etc) has a completely distinct identity from Oxford – Temple Cowley feels like it’s its own little town rather than an area of Oxford. In any case, not a single Tory councillor has been elected to the City Council so it seems a bit wrong that a third of the city has a Tory MP – it would make more sense for there to be Oxford West (including the centre) and Oxford East and to hive off Abingdon to a country seat tbh.
