Million sigs vs Blair

News reaches us of a petition against Blair becoming President of the EU.

Its organisers are hoping for a million signatures before June.

I can’t put it any better than them:

In violation of international law, Tony Blair committed his country to a war in Iraq that a large majority of European citizens opposed. This war has claimed hundreds of thousands of victims and displaced millions of refugees. It has been a major factor in today’s profound destabilisation of the Middle East, and has weakened world security. In order to lead his country into war, Mr Blair made systematic use of fabricated evidence and the manipulation of information. His role in the Iraq war would weigh heavily on the image of the Union in the world, should he in fact be named its president.

I have also set up a Facebook group for those who don’t want to see Blair as President of Europe.
Please join and feel free to invite all your European friends…

The possibility of TB becoming president of Europe would be the kiss of death for any further integration or referenda.
Expect to see the Daily Mail and Torygraph get on the stump any minute.

Quite right Simon. Yet another reason why Blair would be a horrendous choice as EU President.
I’d be interested in hearing who other Lib Dems would favour as the first President. Off the top of my head I think former Irish President Mary Robinson would be superb. Her work to tackle discrimination against women and gay people. Her excellent work as UN Human Rights Commissioner and fighting poverty and racial discrimination would make her a fantastic European President.
