Mulholland: Charles should cancel Pakistan visit

Prince Charles has been urged to cancel a visit to Pakistan which will coincide with the scheduled execution of a Leeds man on death row.

Mirza Tahir Hussain, 36, is due to be executed on 1 November for murdering a taxi driver in 1998.

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall are due to visit the country from 29 October to 3 November.

  • For exactly the reason that

it would be “monstrous” for Mr Hussain to be hanged during the Prince’s visit

doesn’t Prince Charles’ presence there at the time make it more likely that the execution will be cancelled, or at least further postponed?

Also, I do hesitate to tread into Pakistani politics which I do not claim to understand, but while Musharraf has undoubtedly done some good things, am I the only person who thinks it is a bit odd to hear the Pakistani President saying that stopping the execution is beyond his powers, bearing in mind how he got to that position in the first place?

There’s no assurance that the execution won’t go ahead when HRH is there – indeed some elements might see that as a good way of asserting their independence from the West.

IMO the clearest way to show disproval is for Charles not to go. We should also be looking at other ways to express displeasure.

  • Prince charles is an adulterer and as such is not fit to become king of England. His ugly wife, an adulteress is not fit to become queen of England.
The royal family who seem to think they deserve something more than the general population if this country should be removed from any privilege and all monies and property they have gained from such privilege redistributed back to the people.
    Make England a Republic.
    Long live the Republic.
