Over 13,000 raging against the election – and for the Lib Dems – on Facebook

‘We got Rage Against the Machine to #1, we can get the Lib Dems into office!’ is the name of the independent Facebook group set up just 2 weeks ago, and which currently numbers well over 13,000 fans. Which means (with impeccable liberalism) that this unofficial grassroots movement is already almost as big as almost as the official Lib Dem Facebook group.

As the group’s creators state:

This is NOT a bandwagon! This group is intended to encourage those who would like to vote Lib Dem, but usually don’t in favour of strategic voting, that if we unite we can really see a change in the 2 party system.

Also, the group wasn’t set up by lib dems, it was set up by Ben Stockman. He sent Jon Morter (creator of the RATM group) an email asking if he would mention the group. Jon Morter liked the idea… and that’s how it took off!!

Our reference to the Christmas RATM effort is simply a recognition of the way people can join together for a purpose (any purpose!) using a social networking site. However, it’s good to see that Rage oppose two-party politics also lol (See http://tinyurl.com/ye2f582)

Want to promote the group to your non-Lib Dem Facebook friends? Then spread the word, using http://libdem2010.com as the direct link, or Digg it here.

The Voice’s favourite quote from the group?

“Voting Lib Dem is like playing a game on hard mode.”

(Best quote ever from Greg Watkinson lol)

If you believe in Lib Dem policies, vote for them. Don’t be fooled into thinking you have to vote for the least-bad of Labour and Conservative!

PS: Lib Dem blogger Mark Thomaspon has written about the group here.

  • Hah, I got a mention, check the posters made from a modified version of the quote here;
    http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=3878041&op=2&o=global&view=global&subj=113749985304255&id=641738599

    Also note that while we now have over 15k members, the important part is the cumulative growth;

    an optimistic but not impossible point from the group;
    ‘A 50% percent growth in the last 24 hours!!!
    At this rate, we’ll have 1 Million members by the 24th April, over 4 Million by the 29th & well over 10 Million group members come election day. If only half of the group vote Lib Dems, that will be enough to win 🙂
    Plus there’s all the family members & friends who aren’t on fb that we have converted to Lib Dem voters too.
    THIS IS ACHIEVABLE. WE CAN GET THE LIB DEMS INTO POWER :)’

  • Whilst the music-buying public is very fickle, the electorate, believe it or not, is loyal and there are not great swings in general elections. The Lib Dems best hope is a hung parliament. This means:
    1- Fighting for every Lib Dem vote in the 300 or so seats where they are first, second or a close third
    2- Voting Tory in the Lab-Con micromarginals to remove Brown’s Commons majority
    3- Voting Labour in Lab-Con marginals where Labour start 10% ahead to block a Tory majority

  • Hugh, while the music buying public is very fickle, this has nothing to do with the group. The group is named so in order to bring to mind the idea of people power and is an amusing play on the situation to get people interested. Note that the vast majority of the members of the group are in the age group 18-23 and have not voted yet and so have no loyalty to any party. If this group increases at it’s current rate it will have reached the majority of these voters.

  • I joined the group a few hours ago nearly 3000 people have joined since.
    There seems to be a real appetite for change in the UK and hopefully this facebook page will make some difference.

  • Over 40,000 members now! 🙂
    If you count to 10 seconds than refresh the groups page on facebook, there is always an increase. 😀

  • This article should be changed to – “Nearly 60,000 raging against the election – and for the Lib Dems – on Facebook”
    Brilliant x

  • Over 66,000 now! It’s growing so fast! I think the group creators contacted newspapers like the guardian about the group, I wonder if they’ll get mentioned on the news? I hope so.

  • 70,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we want 1 million before election
