Peter Billenness and David Rebak pass away

It’s been a very sad week for many Liberal Democrats with the death of two long-standing members.

David was active for many years, including in the early days of the Liberal growth in Southwark and most recently in Enfield. He was very generous with his time and advice and maintained a thorough optimism about the ability of anyone, anywhere to build up the party in their area.

I didn’t really know Peter personally, though I met him at several party events and he too was an activist for many years; there is more on the South East Lib Dems site.

I am sure that not just my thoughts are with both their families.

I knew David well when he was candidate in Twickenham in the 60’s At the time he had a printing business in Watford and introduced the idea of personalised letters to voters using automatic printers. How things change

David Rebak’s funeral is at 11am Sunday 11th Feb at Cheshunt Reform Synagogue Cemetery, Bulls Cross Ride, Cheshunt, Herts, EN7 5HT – see http://www.reformjudaism.org.uk/driving-instructions.html for directions

  • David’s funeral this morning was very moving and from hearing the accounts there of his life I realised how much more of a remarkable man he was, and what a varied life life he led, even beyond what I already knew. Very sad.

I was Chairman of the Twickenham Liberal Association at the time when David was the candidate. As I recall, we first met at an evening class where we were studying local politics.
David should also be remembered for a campaign to recognise Jewish and other non Christians at British war graves. His uncle Myer Gordon died in 1916 on the Somme and his name is on the Thiepval Memorial but there was no recognition of his faith nor of other non Christian religions.
David Rebak had military connections – former Royal Artillary captain – and after 7 years persuaded the War Graves Commission to rectify this ommission. See article in Daily Telegraph 1/11/1999.
Sorry to have missed the news of David’s passing in February.
