Simon Hughes: Keeping the green agenda on track

An email from Simon Hughes to party members and supporters yesterday read…

As the Guardian reports today, the Liberal Democrats have stopped George Osborne giving in to his backbenchers and kept the Coalition’s green agenda on track.

Liberal Democrats are determined to make the Coalition Government the greenest ever and prove that going green can be good for business and jobs.

Today’s announcement of subsidy levels for renewable energies gives investors the long term stability they need and should see £20-25bn invested by 2017.

It will help create new green jobs and keep us on track to meet our ambitious climate change targets.

Liberal Democrats have been environmentalists since long before it was fashionable and that commitment is as strong as ever now that we are in government.

Clearly some of our Coalition colleagues are not so committed to the green agenda, but rest assured Liberal Democrat ministers will lead the fight against climate change at the heart of government.

Yours,

Simon Hughes
Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader

PS: Over at Lib Dem Voice, Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Davey explains today’s announcement and its importance.

Does the fight against climate change include subsidies for gas drilling? unabated gas post 2030?
How about some investment in concentrated solar in North Africa? Building our very own unsubsidised nuclear power plants?
Personally I think we will probably still need gas fired generation then, but lets be honest about exactly what happened.
