Sunday extras open thread: From Christian humanism to live jazz

Thanks to everyone who joined us for the LDV Awards evening yesterday. So what will be the fun events today?

There is a very full programme on the fringe today – from promoting healthy lifestyles to the Gibraltar reception, from cycling to the future of the BBC, with several sessions on various environmental issues. The RSPCA is offering beer and curry, and there will be live jazz at the Azerbaijan reception.

Do let us all know about any events you went to, or any worth dropping in for.

How to find out what is happening

You can view or download the directory, which lists all the fringe meetings.

You can instal the Conference app from the App store or from Google Play or view it on Blackberry or Windows phones.

  • This is the human-rights abusing Azerbaijani jazz (according to a member on this site) that Lib Dem Voice is promoting? When a member of an organisation that I’m a part of tells me we’re promoting an organisation that’s specifically set up to legitimise a corrupt and abusive regime, I like to take note and ask questions – not promote it! https://www.libdemvoice.org/opinion-human-rights-and-all-that-jazz-42645.html

The OMOV made me seriously reconsider joining the party, this has reminded me of all that is wrong. If LDV is going to help organisations that legitimise the abuse of people far away, I can’t be a part of that. Why has nobody taken any notice of what Miss. Bridger wrote on Wednesday? Does she lie? Prone to fantasy? Is she paranoid about things we need not concern ourselves with? Or is she one of the few with a proper moral backbone and an inability to countenance the abuse of others? Nobody answered her question, so I’d like to put it again : should we be accepting money from organisations linked to human rights abuses, organisations that back dictatorships?

I don’t expect an answer to any of these questions, Lib Dems seem incapable of confronting issues now. Sad to see that these problems are endemic and that few seem to care. Next May seems like a foregone conclusion – if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything!

I like open threads, thanks. Clegg did a good interview on Marr this morning. I like Clegg a lot, I only fall out when I’m trying to influence policy! Although, I do genuinely get annoyed about these things. 🙂

  • The problem is you have one policy at a national level and other(s) locally.

You can’t pledge nationally that you’ll build 100,000’s of new homes, which lets face it, is the only way to end the housing crisis, and then celebrate when NIMBY councilors are elected on pledges to block housing development in their local areas.

Who’s side is the party really on? Those who need housing or those who already have it and wish to deny it to others? I don’t know but I suspect it’s the later.
