Welfare reform: enough of the stick, time for the carrot

This coalition has bravely attempted to tackle welfare reform. It’s been controversial, unpopular, but essential – the fact that unemployment has remained surprisingly low throughout this parliament is partly due to the welfare and labour market reforms this government has introduced.

However, there have been far too many losers in the last round of austerity. With the next parliament approaching we must change tact on welfare reform. Carmichael says: Come to Conference in Glasgow (and so do I)

Glasgow's "Squinty bridge" by Paul WalterSecretary of State for Scotland Alistair Carmichael has made a lovely little video to promote this year’s Autumn Conference. We’re returning to Glasgow. I will not mention the delicious irony that Alistair is actually sitting in Party HQ in Edinburgh. After all, it’s not as if there’s any rivalry between the two cities, or anything.

I’ll also not mention the taxi driver who told me, without any rancour, that he couldn’t wait for the Liberal Democrats to be wiped out.

Seriously, though, Glasgow is brilliant both as a place and a Conference venue and it’s well worth coming.

Change of venue for Autumn Conference 2014

There have been some changes to Liberal Democrat Conference in Autumn 2014.

We had originally been due to go back to Liverpool next year. However, our conference fell immediately before the Scottish referendum on September 18. In view of this we have had to move our conference to a different date so as not to interfere with campaigning for the referendum. This has also meant changing venues as Liverpool did not have any suitable availability. Instead, Glasgow are able to accommodate us, so we are pleased to be returning there.

Federal Conference Committee didn’t take this decision lightly and we …
