Dunfermline by-election win for Labour, disaster for SNP and Lib Dems hold 3rd place

Your bleary eyed correspondent has returned from the Dunfermline by-election count. The result was as follows:

Cara Hilton (Labour), 10,275,  42.4%

Shirley Anne Somerville (SNP), 7402,  30.6%

Susan Leslie (Lib Dem), 2852, 11.79%

James Reekie (Conservative), 2009, 8.3%

Peter Adams (UKIP), 908, 3.75%

Zara Kitson (Green), 583,  2.4%

John Black (Ind), 161, 0.67%

We were squeezed a bit but stayed in a creditable third place.

Kennedy, Carmichael and Alexander visit Dunfermline as Susan Leslie’s campaign hots up

Dunfermline campaign Susan plus deliverersSusan Leslie’s spirited campaign to be the next Liberal Democrat MSP for Dunfermline continues to gather pace. So far, almost all of the party’s Scottish MPs and MSPs have been to visit. Charles Kennedy did a walkabout on Dunfermline High Street and Danny Alexander is expected in the constituency this evening. Leaflets have been flying out of the office.

Liberal Youth Scotland held an action day last weekend and Liberal Youth across the country have been making phone calls.

Susan Leslie selected for Dunfermline by-election

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe Scottish Liberal Democrats have today announced that Fifer Susan Leslie has been selected as their candidate for the Dunfermline parliamentary by-election.

The selection was formally announced by Liberal Democrat Secretary of State for Scotland Michael Moore MP in his speech to Liberal Democrat conference in Glasgow.

Susan Leslie is a university lecturer who was elected as a councillor in 2007.

Speaking after the announcement, Councillor Susan Leslie said:

Willie Rennie and Jim Tolson got things done for local people and stood up for the area. That’s what Dunfermline will get if they elect me as the new MSP for the area.
