If I post a link to the BBC’s report on the IFS study of schools funding, is there any chance it will stay here, rather than being removed because it is “off-topic”?

Nick Clegg claimed, bizarrely, that funding per pupil would be increased even if it wasn’t for the “pupil premium.” On the contrary, the truth is that even when the pupil premium is taken into account, funding per pupil is going to be cut in real terms.

The IFS also found that despite the increase in overall school spending (0.1% per year in real terms), school spending per pupil would fall in real terms by 0.6% per year – to a total of 2.25% over four years.

No he didn’t. He said there would be a flat cash settlement per pupil, even though pupil numbers will increase, and in addition a pupil premium, worth £2.5bn a year by 2014/15, targeted at the most disadvantaged children. The Guardian will be publishing a retraction soon.

    John

Thanks. It seems that it was the Guardian’s initial misreporting that was bizarre, not what Clegg said.

However, the fact remains that according to the IFS, total funding per pupil will fall in real terms, even when the pupil premium has been taken into account.
