Tim Farron’s message for Eid

Tim Farron Eid messageTim Farron has issued this message for Eid:

As-Salamu Alaykum.

I would like to wish Muslims in the United Kingdom and all over the world a happy Eid.

Eid for Muslims is a time for reflection as we consider the world we live in, and our part in it. In the light of some desperately tragic events, we all need to consider how we can bring about greater togetherness and show humility to one another.

I was keen to emphasise the importance of this, for Britons of all faiths and none, when joining Muslims marking Ramadan at the London Central mosque.

It was clear to me on that visit and throughout Ramadan, the work of so many Muslims who work to transform the lives of those less fortunate, be it through selfless acts of good will and charity.

It’s therefore been absolutely heartbreaking to see the spike in racist and xenophobic attacks following the referendum.

We must be clear that the outcome of the referendum was not a green light to xenophobia. It must have no impact on the multi-cultural, multi-ethnic and multi-faith society that Britain is and will remain.

To the Muslim community I have this message – the Liberal Democrats will continue to fight for an open, tolerant and progressive Britain.

Thank you and Eid Mubarak.

    We’re supposed to be a secular party….

  • We don’t exist in a vacuum. It’s manners, if you seek to represent everyone, to pay attention to important days for them. I am an atheist. That doesn’t stop me from acknowledging the festivals my friends of faith celebrate or to support them during times like Ramadan.

As Chair of Humanist and Secularist Liberal Democrats, and as a party member, I welcome Tim’s statement.
We are a secular party. We do not align ourselves with any one religion, or with religious beliefs as against non-religious beliefs. We celebrate the diversity of beliefs within the party and within society, and we work towards a state and a society that does not discriminate on the basis of belief.

We are indeed a secular party. We aim to *welcome* those of all faiths, and none, which are compatible with a basic liberal outlook.
This can be summarised as LOVE, RESPECT, and TOLERANCE for ALL your fellow humans, respecting their right to act IN CONSCIENCE when it doesn’t violate the fundamental rights of others and RESPECTFULLY entering into dialogue when you believe it does, and encouraging them to do the same.
