Today’s Conservative councillor in trouble story, and it’s odder than most

The headline summarises the full story quite neatly:

Tory councillor forced to resign after he made up claims he suffered from testicular cancer

UPDATE: The story has been widely covered in other media outlets, including the BBC, though only this local newspaper report really adds anything to the orginal report linked above.

  • It is really naff that the LDs have got so little go 4 them that they have to fill up their site with this garbage!!

  • Don’t be so flippant, Laurence.

It does show the depths that the tories have to go to to get candidates – even where they win they aren’t honest enough to, or worthy of representing their pubic.

  • ..and DC is really AC .. the antichrist… You LDS really need to get over yourselves.

This site needs to be split into two separate bits:
    1. A gossip site with tittle-tattle for those who want it
    2. A discussion site for the rest

  • I’m sorry I don’t agree with you davy – abstract intellectualism is a waste of time because it has little relation to reality.

Snippets like this do illuminate the perverse situation where our conservative opponents can rake in votes and win seats irrespective of the character or capability of the individual in the post – in this case the vote was fatally undeserved and one wonders if he did or would do any more than wear a blue tie with his suit when having his photo taken.

It shows how their voting constituency is detatched from the Conservative party and it underlines what we are fighting for here.

What a sad story. It could have been a councillor of any party.

  • Oranjepan – u miss the point – every Party has its oddities, politics attracts them – have you forgotten Jeremy and Mark? It teaches you zilch about real politics. Thats why the LDs keep goin nowhere.

  • There are some types of behaviour from our political opponents that are worth bringing to attention because they represent political traits that we are fighting against: the Labour councillor in Rochdale trying to use his influence to get one of our councillors sacked is an example of traditional labour movement bullying; the Tory councillor in Medway with his remarks about single parents being sterilised is an example of reprehensible attitudes that still exist in the Conservative Party (though I accept that they are trying to root them out – but look on any Tory blog to see that they have not yet succeeded) – apologies if I have not remembered the precise details correctly. But I don’t think that generalised political ‘atrocity’ stories should be given space here; we are all human, we are all strange, we all make mistakes. Every party has its share of potential crackpots and criminals and it says nothing about the values of a particular party when one of its members goes off the rails.

  • davy – I don’t think the story here is about the individual, but the party.

Although I’m guessing to a certain extent, what I think it shows is that the tories depended on national politics to win a local seat, which may well be a positive indication for the GE as far as they are concerned, but it reflects badly on their general strategy as well as for the honesty of their campaigning in that area (but then that’s regressive tory politics for you – despite Cameron’s protestations to the contrary in places like the Independent) – is the Conservative party now nothing more than the protest vote of choice?

It also doesn’t bode well for the community in which he was elected as it indicates they voted on a false prospectus and it is unlikely they got the best person for the job.

Finally, it suggests there is a window of opportunity for campaigners committed to making a positive difference within the ambit of the role, such as we LibDems advocate.

  • I agree with the calls to dispense with these stories. They’re not worth bothering about.

  • orajepan – ur a joke and ur not listening; take off the yellow specs!

It is being dealt with at a local level, help needed, but not as much as the two parliamentary by elections. It is a non news story, unless you live in Welwyn Hatfield. I hope he does not get his allowance for the week he has served!
