Top of the Blogs: The Golden Dozen #104

Welcome to the 104th – yes, it’s our second anniversary, folks! – of our weekly round-ups from the Lib Dem blogosphere, featuring the seven most popular stories according to click-throughs from the Aggregator (8th-14th February 2009), together with a hand-picked quintet, mostly courtesy of LibDig, you might otherwise have missed.

As ever, let’s start with the most popular post, and work our way down.

1. What’s the difference between a Liberal and a Social Democrat? on David Grace’s Disgruntled Radical blog.
Actually I’m not sure how this made it to number one, since it was published 11 days ago. Still, the Aggregator stat-counter has never been wrong before. And, anyway, it’s a good post.

2. Results: Thursday 12th February 2009
on John Hemming MP’s blog.
Honours pretty even.

3. Someone claiming to be our Conservative Parliamentary Candidate on Judith Brooksbank’s blog.
It’s the short ones that get the clicks, y’know.

4. Labour: ruining families’ lives since 1997 on Liz Williams’ singing my song live-journal.
‘… what I really want is for the Labour Government to admit that its detention policy is cruel, wasteful and ineffective, and change it.’

5. My Old Annual Bonus on Charlotte Gore’s blog.
The case for the defence.

6. Irfan’s dangerous position on ‘Costigan Quist’s’ Himmelgarten Cafe blog.
Why Irfan (and Jacqui Smith and Chris Huhne) were wrong about Geert Wilders ‘If, as Irfan suggests, we surrender free speech at the first sign of someone wielding a big stick, we are truly setting ourselves down a very slippery slope.’

7. Was Chris Huhne right to say Geert Wilders should be banned from the UK? on Lib Dem Voice.
Well of course he wasn’t.

And now to the five blog-posts that come highly recommended regardless of the number of Aggregator click-throughs they attracted. As is now traditional we’re using the LibDig widget to select some of the posts from the seven days in question which you’ve most ‘dug’. But, remember, if you want to highlight a Lib Dem blog article published in the past seven days – your own, or someone else’s – using the steam-powered method of e-mail all you have to do is drop me a line at [email protected] (providing the web-link and author, and any tagline comment you care to have published).

8. What do Dr Mark Pack and the painter Titian have in common? on Alix Mortimer’s The People’s Republic of Mortimer blog.
‘… one’s a pioneering creative working in the pay of some of the most powerful, feared and megalomaniacal individuals of his day, and the other is a Venetian Renaissance painter.’

9. Wiki-gate – Is this the most pathetic spat imaginable
on Alex Lanson’s A Lanson Boy blog.
“Lanson Boy amusingly compares Titian to Benjamin Button – he’s been getting younger by the hour.” (Submitted by paulwalteruk via LibDig).

10. Jacqui Smith is getting away with it… on Mark Reckons’ blog.
“Follow up on the story about what nobody else is calling “Lodgergate”. Can she really be getting away with this?” (Submitted by MarkThompson via LibDig).

11. Horses Versus Esctacy on Charlotte Gore’s blog.
“‘The truth is the wrong message?'” (Submitted by lizw via LibDig).

12. Why we should welcome the launch of the Social Liberal Forum
on Iain Sharpe’s Eaten by missionaries blog.
‘SLF has the opportunity to engage in new thinking about liberalism and Lib Dem policy, stimulate genuine debate with a different perspective from, but without hostility towards sister/rival bodies such as Centre Forum. I look forward to seeing how this new initiative develops.’

That’s it for another week. Happy blogging as the Golden Dozen enters its third year!
