Top of the Blogs: The Lib Dem Golden Dozen #333

Welcome to the Golden Dozen, and our 333rd weekly round-up from the Lib Dem blogosphere … Featuring the seven most popular stories beyond Lib Dem Voice according to click-throughs from the Aggregator (30 June-6 July, 2013), together with a hand-picked quintet, normally courtesy of LibDig, you might otherwise have missed.

Don’t forget: you can sign up to receive the Golden Dozen direct to your email inbox — just click here — ensuring you never miss out on the best of Lib Dem blogging.

As ever, let’s start with the most popular post, and work our way down:

1. Is Tom Watson’s resignation letter any good? Depends on your politics, it seems  by Richard Morris on A View from Ham Common.
A summary of the commentary makes interesting reading.

2. The most unlikely story about a Lib Dem MP this week – and it’s true  by Mark Pack on Mark Pack.
This week? Year, more likely. Now, if it were about waistcoats, we’d all have guessed it immediately, but this is a surprise.

3. Is carrying on a mobile phone conversation at a checkout rude or not? by Neil Monnery on The Ramblings of Neil Monnery .
Neil agrees with Nick on this one.

4. Tim Farron is either “wrong or compellingly correct” by Andrew Page on A Scottish Liberal.
Andrew analyses the President’s comments at the recent National Prayer Breakfast.

5. Liberal Democrat commentators in the media by Alex Marsh on Alex’s Archives.
Do radio & tv producers choose the right people to talk about the Liberal Democrats? Honourable mention for our Nick Thornsby, but questions on diversity.

6. Ed Miliband still feels he has questions to answer over Tom Watson by Charlotte Henry on Digital Politico.
On those PMQs briefing notes found in the Westminster toilet.

7. Leicestershire councillor convicted of benefit fraud by Jonathan Calder on Liberal England.
The accompanying photo is a blast from the past, too. Inspector Blakey, indeed.

And now to the five blog-posts that come highly recommended, regardless of the number of Aggregator click-throughs they attracted. These are normally chosen using the LibDig bookmarking website for party members, the site where you can highlight blog-posts you want to share with your fellow Lib Dems. Remember, though, you’re still more than welcome to nominate for the Golden Dozen a Lib Dem blog article published in the past seven days – your own, or someone else’s – using the steam-powered method of e-mail … all you have to do is drop a line to [email protected]. This week, again, I’m thrilled to again have the help of the excellent Alex Wilcock who, by the way, hasn’t had the £80 back from Mark Littlewood that he mentioned last week.

8. On being bisexual – my appearance on Radio 4 by Edward Lord on Edward Lord.
Edward tells Eddie Mair about his experiences as a bisexual person.

9. But he’s a Tory by Jen Yockney on Either/And.
On why it’s good for sexuality not to be a party political plaything and why both people who grumble that the latest out bisexual MP is a Tory and the Daily Mail have got it wrong. (AW)

10. Wither amnesty for illegal immigrants? by Peter Wrigley on A Keynsian Liberal .
Contrasting Nick Clegg’s courageous debate performance with his unilateral retreat. (AW)

11. Tom Watson’s resignation, first draft by Jon Walls on Contrasting Sounds.
A very funny send-up of the UNITE bruiser’s ego, with killer points about his Defence record. “Now that facts have come out, however, it is important that the Labour Party publishes its report in full. Only with all our dirty laundry hanging out in public would I be able to credibly spin things so that someone else cops the blame. (AW)

12. Brainstorming Rolling Stones Glee Club songs by Jennie Rigg on Jennie Rigg.
A terrifying response to the Nick’N’Mick dinner, prompting an outstanding comments thread (special shout-out to Andrew Hickey). Sadly, Nick was busy yesterday and had to turn down the offer of lead vocals on ‘Losing Deposits’ in Hyde Park. (AW)

And that’s it for another week. Happy blogging ‘n’ reading ‘n’ nominating.
