12.15 pm Ealing and Sedgefield update: Lib Dems second, Tories trail in third

This seems to be the consensus of speculation so far:

– the Lib Dems will come a good second in Ealing Southall, running Labour hard, and shrugging off the Tory challenge;

– and will leap-frog the Tories into second place behind Labour in Sedgefield.

  • I wonder how many Tories are staying up?
I hope we take the wind out of them tonight!!

  • Labour hold Sedgfield, us second, Tories third according to BBC website

Just seen Grant Shapps on Sky News – what a plonker

  • Grant “1234” Shapps on BBC now. Predicting best Tory result for a decade. Excuse me whilst I spit out my coffee!

  • Daniel Bowen 20th Jul '07 - 1:38am

    Is Grant Shapps real?

  • Hilarious spinning from the Tories on BBC News 24 at the moment

  • nigelashton 20th Jul '07 - 1:43am

Ealing Cleveland Ward result is at http://tinyurl.com/2at98w

  • No doubt Grant Shapps will say that the Cleveland Ward result (with a Tory win) is the only true electoral test of the evening.

  • nigelashton 20th Jul '07 - 1:47am

Tory majority over LD in Cleveland Ward up from 88 to 231 🙁

  • Any one know whats happening in ES?

  • Qari (22): all main candidates are now in the hall. Apparently a result due at or around 2pm.

  • Sorry, 2am!

  • oh thanks stuart. I’m really surprised at the BNP result.

I guess thats what happens when Muslims fail to reach out to the vulnerable.

I’m really hoping that Lib Dem wins in ES even though I’m not from there.

  • I’ll stay up until 2pm if the recounts finally go our way!!!

  • lol no worries. Thats like 5 Mins away!

  • From a friend:
Interesting little Freudian slip from the speakerine on Sky News, who has just stated that the Tories “unfortunately” came third at Sedgefield. Tut, tut. “Fair and balanced”, eh Rupert?

Naturally I’m not watching Murdoch at all but there y’go.

Why is the Beeb now reshowing the Sedgefield result?

  • Lets just see

  • it looks like they got david out of bed to get an interview…

  • The BBC’s “independent” expert is explaining why the Tories did well in Sedgefield (with a 0.2% vote share increase) and we did badly (with an 11% swing and pushing the Tories into 3rd place). Annoying!

  • Another 10 mins!!

  • Apparently, it’s now scheduled for 2.20am.

  • I’ve only got interested in this election because of MPACUK. read one of their articles http://www.mpacuk.org/content/view/3871/35/

I really hope the asians did vote Lib Dems.

  • The expert is now explaining why we won’t be able to read anything from the ES result into the wider political picture. How many times can Cameron keep failing to win elections before media commentators realise he isn’t the dream ticket that some believe?

  • Who is this David guy? I’ve never heard of him before.

  • nigelashton 20th Jul '07 - 2:13am

David Cowling is the BBC’s head of political research.

Why do London counts always seem to take much longer than the rest of the country?

  • 10118 LiB Dems
    Respect 588
    Cons 8230

  • Labour has won. Cons didn’t do well.

  • LibDem/Bakhai:10,118
    Loony:188
    EDP:152
    Respect:588
    Green:1135
    Ind:87
    Tory/Lit:8,230
    Christian:280
    Ind:275
    UKIP:285
    Labour:15,188
    ???:???
    Labour win

  • Sedgefield: Tories pushed into third place
Ealing Southall: Tories stay in third place

Let’s see the Tories spin that one: third place in North and South.

  • nigelashton 20th Jul '07 - 2:35am

The Tory spin will be that their percentage went up in both seats (I think it went up in Ealing, albeit marginally).

  • Labour 15,188 41.58
    LibDem 10,118 27.70
    Tory 8,230 22.53
    Green 1135 3.11
    Respect 588 1.61
    UKIP 285 0.78

That’ll probably display awfully, but Labour got 41%, doubt we could’ve won even if the Tories hadn’t campaigned on that, the squeeze wouldn’t have been that good.

  • I advise people to visit conservativehome and read the comments on there. Very uplifting honesty from rank & file Tories.

  • What was Lib dems result last election? Whats the difference?

  • lol tony lits on!!

  • Not impressive was he; plum in his mouth over-educated stereotype Tory getting by on Daddy’s money.

Horrible generalisation but that’s how he came across, so what was DC thinking in shoe-horning him in?

OTOH, Nigel isn’t coming across great, but at least he comes across as sincere. Ah well, time to turn in.
