Nick Clegg launching Scottish Lib Dem election campaign (BBC)

It will be almost like old times for the Lib Dems, with former leader Charles Kennedy joining Nick Clegg to launch the Lib Dems’ Scottish campaign – as CK himself tweeted earlier today. Here’s how the BBC reports it:

Mr Clegg will get the Scottish campaign under way in Glasgow along with Scottish Lib Dem leader Tavish Scott and senior party figures, including Charles Kennedy.

The party – Scotland’s second biggest in Westminster terms – aims to win seats in Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Glasgow, and has vowed to make Scotland a “Tory-free zone”.

Mr Clegg said: “In this election, the choice for Scots is clear – vote for Liberal Democrats, who will bring about real change and build a fairer Scotland, or stick by a failing Labour Party that long since abandoned you. The SNP cannot make a difference at Westminster, and in Scotland the Tories aren’t in the game.”

If you can’t “seal the deal” after over four years as leader, the doubts might begin to creep in that perhaps you never will.

A big majority of the doubters believe that the Conservatives have not made a strong enough case for a change from Labour and half think that Mr Cameron is too inexperienced to be prime minister. Within that group 45 per cent disagree with Tory proposals to reduce the planned increase in national insurance contributions.

Top Lib Dems out in force to boost local campaigns
Just two examples of ways in which the party’s great and good are helping Lib Dem MPs in marginal seats attract good covereage:

Former Liberal Democrat leader Paddy Ashdown has kicked off his party’s election campaign in Cheltenham, a marginal seat held since 1992. Lord Ashdown was in town on behalf of the current MP and parliamentary candidate Martin Horwood who he described as “a tremendous campaigner”.

• Lib Dem president helps launch Susan Kramer’s election bid (Surrey Comet)

Liberal Democrat Susan Kramer launched her campaign today to win a second term as MP for the Richmond Park and North Kingston constituency. Baroness Ros Scott, the Lib Dem president, joined Mrs Kramer at her campaign headquarters in Richmond to kick off the four week campaign until polling day on May 6.

Elected to parliament for the first time in 2005, Mrs Kramer has a fight on her hands with Zac Goldmith, the Conservative party contender. She said: “Being MP for Richmond Park and north Kingston is a privilege. I have helped thousands of local residents with their problems, taking up their cases and fighting the Government on their behalf.”
