ALDC by-election report, 26th September

There were 12 principal council by-elections this week (2 on Tuesday and 10 on Thursday) and it has been another very successful week for Lib Dem candidates. We registered yet another gain (this time from the Conservatives) as well as several holds and some very impressive second places.

For the second week in a row the results were tumultuous with many seats changing hands. But the 4 Lib Dem victories put us joint first with the Conservatives overall.

Our gain came on Perth and Kinross Council in Strathallan ward where Councillor Alan Watt took the Lib Dems from third place last time to gaining from the Conservatives on the fifth round of counting. Congratulations to Alan and the team in Perth on a great gain.

Moving to Tuesday now, we had a superb result on Waverley BC in Godalming, Binscombe and Charterhouse ward. Here our candidate James Barratt and the local Lib Dem team fought an amazing campaign and increased our vote share by over 10% to finish on 714 votes, just 11 votes fewer than the winning Conservative candidate. Well done to James on a stunning second place. It was so close, but the ward is there for the taking next time. Labour, who were defending the ward, fell all the way to fourth.

    Waverley: who won last time?

  • Jenny Barnes 28th Sep '24 - 2:21pm

Last time we in Waverley had an electoral alliance with the Greens and Labour, this was a Labour seat. All 3 “progressive” parties contested it this time. Labour because they do, Greens because people were chucked out of the party for participating in the alliance, and LDs because we thought it was a probably LD win. As you can see, we lost by 11 votes to the Tories. Their candidate put out leaflets full of misleading statements – for example implying that the WFA policy was something to do with the Council and the LDs. Funded by one Jeremy *unt.

  • Jenny Barnes 28th Sep '24 - 2:22pm

PS before the alliance, Waverley had been Tory majority for many years.

  • Jenny Barnes 28th Sep '24 - 2:24pm

PPS A very disheartening result following our intense GE campaign losing to *unt by 900 votes, and a very intense ground campaign for the council seat. A case of “where we worked we lost” :(((

  • Graham Jeffs 28th Sep '24 - 3:05pm

Thank you Jenny, albeit this is a ward that has a long history of being Liberal or LD since the reform of local government in the early 70s.

I can appreciate that you feel deflated. But think back to the Conservative tactics the last time the LDs controlled Waverley, doubtless supercharged now with lots of Conservative money !

I wonder to what extent the past alliances undermined the foundations of our support. There is no way this seat would ever have been Labour as a result of the electorate positively voting for that!

  • Jenny Barnes 28th Sep '24 - 4:45pm

    The previous results were LD 1377, green 1280, Lab 1061 Con 984, 954, 860.
It’s a 3 member seat but only the Labour member seat was being contested.

  • Graham Jeffs 28th Sep '24 - 6:06pm

Thanks again Jenny. May your fortunes be better in the future!
