Crewe & Nantwich: what the result is looking like

The Voice’s Lib Dem sources are saying it is likely to be Conservative 45-50% range, Labour 25-30% and Liberal Democrats 15-20% range, which is in line with what’s been said elsewhere. Big Conservative win, massive drop in the Labour vote, Liberal Democrat vote little changed from the general election.

First verdicts: good news for the Conservatives, bad news for Labour as the defeat will be at the grimmest end of their predictions, and relief for Liberal Democrats that the London elections style two-party squeeze has been avoided.

UPDATE: We hear party is expecting about an 8% swing from Labour to Liberal Democrats. …

First tea for two winners

The Sunday Telegraph‘s Mandrake diary yesterday reported the party’s Tea for Two competition for helpers signing in at the Crewe and Nantwich by-election HQ over the next few days.

The party will get in touch with the winners once they’ve all been drawn but we can exclusively reveal the two winners randomly selected so far: Alun Griffiths from Bradford won tea for two in London with Sarah Teather, and local member Ken Veitch from Nantwich won tea with Simon Hughes.

Go and help this week and you could win tea with Chris Huhne, Lord Rennard, Vince Cable or Nick Clegg …

Compose Dubya’s epitaph, and win a book!

Lib Dem Voice has an advance copy of a new book, Hijacking America, to give away to one lucky reader (courtesy of its publishers, Polity Press).

Written by Susan George, a well-known political scientist who used to work for Greenpeace, Hijacking America is billed as “fascinating, thorough and often chilling account of the decades-long transformation of American society and political culture.”

It’s available to buy from this Friday – but you can be sent one before then by entering our competition.

But, hurry, you have just one day – entries must be received by 1pm tomorrow, Tuesday, 13th May.

To win a copy, we want you to come up with a one-line epitaph for George W. Bush’s presidency. It can be funny, it can be sage, it can be harsh – entirely up to you. The Lib Dem Voice collective will choose their favourite: it’s entirely subjective, I’m afraid, and our decision is of course final.

Please do ensure you leave a correct contact email in the thread with your entry, otherwise we have no way of contacting you to ask for your address so you can receive your victor’s spoils.

Here’s the full book blurb for you to find out more.

Tributes to Richard Holme

(From a party email)

Former Liberal Democrat Leaders Paddy Ashdown and Menzies Campbell have paid tribute to Liberal Democrat peer Richard Holme, who has died at the age of 71. Lord Holme, who was the party’s Northern Ireland spokesman during the 1990s, and a member of the joint consultative committee with the Government on constitutional issues, died at home in West Sussex after a long battle with cancer. Lord Ashdown described him as a “man of outstanding talent”. Sir Menzies said the late peer was “one of the most perceptive analysts of politics in this country”. Current leader Nick Clegg said

Election results: our afternoon thread

Congratulations to Dominic McCavish, now the first Liberal Democrat elected to Barrow-in-Furness Borough Council.

Liberal Democrat team in Crewe seems hopeful that there will be one or more Liberal Democrat gains from Labour in the elections in the Crewe & Nantwich constituency. Update: confirmed.

A cheery half-wave to the BBC: gosh, your round-up on News 24 has suddenly found a lot more good news about the Liberal Democrast to report!

Friday election results news

Wrexham: Liberal Democrats become largest party.

Reading: Liberal Democrats defeated Labour council leader – congratulations to Warren Swaine.

Liberal Democrats making gains in Swansea: up three seats.

Party looks set to be running more councils after these elections than before – gaining Burnley, Sheffield, Hull and St Albans, whilst losing Pendly and West Lindsey.

London Mayor election turnout: BBC says it is looking to be 45%, which would be up 8% on last time. That’s a big increase, but – as mentioned before – not into the league of really high turnouts suggested by some of the more excitable Conservative chatter yesterday.

How to tell …

Elections news, part 2

Although there were some strong BNP results early in the evening, as the results have settled down it’s looking like a mediocre result for them with the BBC reporting that their vote overall is unchanged on last year.

Liberal Democrats defeat Labour leader in Cardiff.

BBC consistently reporting small net gain in seats for the Liberal Democrats now.

Liberal Democrats now largest party in Exeter. Labour have gone from first to third.

And we start with the news of five Liberal Democrat gains from the Conservatives in Stratford, including deputy leader of the council.

Liverpool: here’s the party’s story

Here’s the party’s news release:

Liberal Democrats retain control of Liverpool

An Independent Labour councillor has joined the Liberal Democrats, tonight, meaning the party has retained its control of Liverpool city Council.

The move means that the Liberal Democrats have 46 of the 90 seats in Liverpool.

Nadia Stewart decided it was in the city’s interest to give the Liberal Democrats an overall majority rather than half the council seats.

Liberal Democrat Chief Executive, Lord Rennard said:

“We are delighted to remain in control of Liverpool with an overall majority. If the BBC is right that we have overtaken Labour in national vote share,

Election highlights

Interesting pattern to some of the poor Conservative results – failing to gain control of Hastings and Weymouth & Portland, going backwards in Gosport and expected to lose control of Purbeck when that counts tomorrow. There seems to be something of a south coast pattern here.

Winchester: another of the key Liberal Democrat – Conservative fights in Southern England saw one net Liberal Democrat gain, including Whiteley ward where a Conservative was arrested over proxy vote fraud allegations. Conservatives also made one net gain.

Woking: score draw between Liberal Democrats and Conservatives with each gaining two seats from the other.

Liverpool: Liberal Democrats …

Vince writes a letter to George

Politics Home reports: “Liberal Democrat Shadow Chancellor, Vince Cable has today written to George Osborne attacking him for encouraging the Government to write blank cheques for the banks at the expense of the taxpayers.”

Here’s an extract of Vince’s letter:

I am pleased to see from your other pronouncements that you have now adopted the proposal which I and the Liberal Democrats have been promoting for a couple of years for bank capital requirements to be managed counter cyclically to reduce the risk of booms of irresponsible lending followed by busts of the kind we are now experiencing. Doctors back Lib Dem MP’s call for drink measures choice

Cast your minds back three months… there was some party disquiet when Lib Dem MP Greg Mulholland first proposed that pubs and restaurants should be forced to start selling smaller glasses of wine again. There were suggestions it sounded a little bit illiberal and nanny-state. The point was soon made that Greg was seeking to restore consumer choice which has been largely eroded in recent years – as Greg said:

In the last few years there has been a deliberate move by many bar and pub companies to phase out the traditional standard size 125ml glass of wine, and only

Wareham goes gold

News reaches the Voice of the Lib Dems taking a council in unusual circumstances.

Two resignations from independent and Conservative members of Wareham Town Council led to two vacancies intended to be determined by by-elections on 1st May.

Nominations closed on April 4th, and when the dust settled it became clear there were only two candidates nominated for the two vacancies, who were therefore elected unopposed.

The two new Lib Dem councillors give the Lib Dems a majority on the Town Council, so we’ve already won our first council before the polls even open.

What’s the question to which Nick answered “No more than 30.”

The question, as asked by ex-Mirror editor Piers Morgan for GQ magazine, was, “How many women would actually know for a fact if you’re good in bed?”

You can read about that, and many other interview extracts, on Sam Coates’ Red Box blog.

Perhaps it’s time for LDV to start a new poll, hem-hem, asking readers which number they believe?

What’s happened to the Conservative candidate for Lambeth & Southwark?

As discussed on Political Betting and UK Polling Report, the official list of candidates for the London Assembly appears to be missing Shirley Houghton, the expected Conservative candidate for Lambeth & Southwark.

Here in Liberal Democrat Voice Towers we don’t have a clue as to whether this is (a) a mistake in the official list, and she has actually been nominated successfully, or (b) an awful mistake by her and her team.

Speculate wildly at will (that is what the internet is for, isn’t it?).

If (b), this will be very good news for Caroline Pidgeon, the Liberal Democrat candidate hoping
