Liberal Democrat Karen Chilvers says over on her blog:

Cllr Nigel Clarke and I are now wondering what effect this had on my campaign and the narrow loss of my seat, given that we were the “dishonest propaganda peddling” councillors they were wrongly referring to it seems.

Of course, we have seen similar behaviour before (the Honeypot Lane allotments farce springs to mind, as does the Brentwood station matter, where they tried to take credit for someone else’s campaigning), but this takes things to a whole new level.

  • Always great where you can force an apology for this kind of political deceit. Pedants’ Corner – A pity the local Tories can’t distinguish between “inferring” and “implying”.

Of course, Lib Dem campaigners should also take note of lessons from such events – there have equally been humiliating cases where we have been forced to issue public apologies.

I dread to think what would happen if every time a Liberal Democrat leaflet makes false allegations for political gain, it had to be corrected. There probably aren’t enough forests in the world.
