Surely it’s not a surprise that Labour would want to prevent the Tories from taking power in a hung parliament!

But if accurate the following sounds like a bit of cock-up, and illustrates the shortcomings of the “let’s-get-Vince-Cable-to-write-a-pamphlet-and-if-any-bits-don’t-go-down-too-well-we-can-always-say-it’s-only-his-personal-opinion-and-not-party-policy” strategy:

“The Tories also highlighted differences between Mr Clegg and his Treasury spokesman, Vince Cable.

Dr Cable, who has called for a wide-ranging programme of public sector cuts, said in a BBC Radio Four interview that no area of spending should be protected.

But in a Times Educational Supplement, Mr Clegg suggested that school spending should be ring-fenced and spared any cuts.”
