Yesterday Chris Huhne set out the party’s approach to cutting youth crime:
“If we want to tackle the problem of youth crime, we need to take action early to stop kids from embarking on a life of crime before it’s too late.
“The old parties are falling over each other trying to be tough on crime, but nothing is being done do stop young people getting sucked in to a cycle of crime.
“Ministers know that programmes to divert kids away from crime work, and are even happy to promote such projects. However, they have failed to fund them properly in favour of punitive policies that grab headlines but achieve little.
“It is time for a new approach to youth justice which both prevents crime and confronts young people with their actions if they do break the law.”
You can watch Chris Huhne explain the policy over on the BBC website, whilst the party’s own website has the full details.

But he said all this at a youth club which the Lib Dem council had just cut funding from.
Crazy idea, but a good way to cut youth crime could be to stop criminalising young people for being young people.
Saw him interviewed on BBC Breakfast a couple of days ago and put it over very well. Judicial systems need to be about reform as well as punishment.
True liberalism. Hurrah.
it’s a good idea but will it work they need to get into the minds of those youths who are criminals! i have seen so much crime done by other youths my age it isnt nice i have been made to watch my friends get beaten and mugged while i have been completley helpless. it may work on some people yes but not all not everyone gets caught! the mopre people gety caught the easier so realy we just need more police in the streets!
