On January 17th, the Federal Policy Committee, in association with the Keynes Forum, is arranging a one day conference at the London School of Economics (LSE) in London to look at “creating a progressive society”. It promises to be a very interesting day, opening with a keynote speech from Nick Clegg MP.
In the morning we will have a plenary session looking at the political challenges and opportunities for the party in creating a progressive society. In the afternoon plenary we will consider the issue of social mobility following the anticipated report from the Social Mobility Commission which Nick set up earlier this year. We are very pleased to confirm that Chair of the Commission Martin Narey will be joined by Vince Cable MP and Sonia Sodha from Demos to discuss this crucial issue.
The Liberal Democrats are now the only hope for a progressive future. Labour has failed to correct the grossly unfair society that the Conservatives created. We will look at how we can build a fair society that offers opportunities for everyone, addresses the stresses that modern families are under and gives young people hope for a better future.
The day will help to broaden the input into the General Election Manifesto, and to strengthen the party’s engagement with progressive opinion formers and thinkers. The conference is an exciting opportunity to get involved in Liberal Democrat thinking and policy development. You will be able to take part in focussed sessions run by policy interest groups and question political and policy experts from inside and outside the party looking at how we can:
>> open up opportunities for all
>> help struggling households
>> and fight climate change without burdening the poor
Previous conferences sold out in advance – so don’t leave it too long to register! To book your place, go to www.libdems.org.uk/conference.
We plan to provide both sign language interpretation and assistance with childcare costs, please contact Debbie Enever in the Policy and Research Unit on 020 7219 2576 or [email protected] if you have questions about these or any other issues.
* Danny Alexander MP is Vice Chair of the Lib Dems’ Federal Policy Committee (FPC) and Chair of the Manifesto Working Group.

Nice little bit of narrative there!
“The Liberal Democrats are now the only hope for a progressive future.”
…the only realistic hope, more like. Hope springs eternal within our opponents even after decades of continual failure.
“Labour has failed to correct the grossly unfair society that the Conservatives created.”
…and the tories won’t be able to correct the economic problems Labour has created – just like both sides have failed on every occasion they’ve come into power.
They may have temporary and immediate answers, but they don’t have any long-term solutions, so we continue to scramble for a foothold as the nation lurches from crisis to crisis and parliament lurches from a Conservative goverment to a Labour government and back again.
Sorry Danny, good stuff though it is this is a bit soft as a line of attack – you won’t tickle them out of power with a feather, occasionally you’ll need to jab them with your quill too.
Will you be drawing the connection between the judgement of this leadership which took us into a wrong-headed war in Iraq with the judgement of the people who’ve got us into this financial crisis..?
If only we’d had someone who was louder and clearer on the mess our economy was going to fall into when we had the leadership election … . Much of what was said then looks like frippery now. No doubt HAD someone stood up and said what everyone is saying now, that person would have been condemned by the great and good as “trying to push our party to the socialist left”, “returning to the failed old policies of the 1970s”, “blowing a dog-whistle to the activists” etc.
Danny, you give me a party leadership I can believe in, and I’ll work for it. Right now, I find it difficult to be arsed.
