The Eastbourne Conservative barchart challenge

The 2005 general election and 2007 local elections in Eastbourne were Conservative-Liberal Democrat fights (score so far: 1 Conservative MP, 1 Lib Dem run council). So anyone care to speculate where this barchart, which graces the latest Conservative leaflet comes from?

Eastbourne Conservative barchart

I await with eager anticipation the usual cries of outrage from the Conservative / Labour (delete as appropriate) hacks who of course believe 100% that they are perfect and it’s absolutely outrageous for anyone to criticise them and anyway, don’t you know that David Lloyd George once dropped a book on a woman’s toe, and that means no-one from THAT party could ever dare criticise anyone else – oh and did I remember to say that Conservative / Labour (delete as appropriate) are perfect and beyond reproach and anyone it is always someone else who does nasty things, really, honest – and please don’t bore me with any evidence, because it just isn’t true is it?

  • Just a thought: has any research been done as to how many people – ordinary voters as opposed to the political anoraks – actually take any of these bar chart things serious??!!

As it says ‘this General Election’, I’d assume it’s based on national opinion polls with ‘here’ meaning ‘in the UK’.

(From here it appears to be a ComRes poll for the Independent from the end of August)
I’m reminded of one of my favourite pieces of creative psephology – a Labour advert in the local paper here in 1997 that ‘proved’ how our low national poll ratings meant we couldn’t win in Colchester.

Could be based on a national opinion poll – though I can’t recall one with those figures. In that case it looks like a reasonable line to run (it was basically the Tory line in Lib Dem/Tory marginals in 1992.

But Glass houses & stones. This is a very silly line of argument to be running.

  • Oh silly me, of course Hywel. It’s far better to just give Tories and Labour a free ride with their “the Lib Dems do evil bar charts but we are saints” line. Must remember that for the future 🙂

They have been saying this about us for year – I’m not aware that it’s ever done us any harm.

We should pick fights that we can win – the end result of this is that people think less of all political parties. That hurts us more than the Tories as people see us as the nicer more honest people.

  • Well said Howell – it’s amusing and pathetic in equal measure to see them doing it. And it only benefits us in the ballot box.

  • They might have won Eastbourne council – but it was not a high turn out. I have to say the standards of a couple of the councillors leaves a lot to be desired too – Oh and the bar chart thing I believe it was a copy of what the Lib Dems do regularly round here.Pot & kettle come to mind.

That barchart is a poll (national) that was conducted just before Brown became PM

  • Why thank you Josephine and Chris for fitting the sterotype of Labour and Tory supporters so perfectly – “we’re angels, you lot are horrid, it’s awful what you do, but hey as we’re angels we can do it too – so there. PS Did I say, we’re angels and you’re horrid?”

I don’t think I could have written either of your two comments better myself if I’d wanted to highlight the hypocriscy of so many Labour and Conservative supporters 🙂

  • Mark, I don’t believe I mentioned my Political allegiance – just because someone has something to say,one should not presume what or who they are – this is a totally Labour type of put down – ”if you don’t agree with us then you re not one of us or worthy of being listened too” – Still I always said the Lib Dems are even more left than Labour – they are just careful not to show it 🙂
Just for the record I was a TRUE LIBERAL, not one of these half old labour half hearted liberals – I never forgave Shirley Williams for pushing through the changes in schools…
Now I think first – read all the available literature and carefully make up my mind before voting…
