Grea Mulholland has won a road safety award for his campaign to get a better deal for families of people killed in car accidents.
He won named Parliamentarian of the Month by the road safety charity Brake.
From the Bradford Telegraph:
Mr Mulholland (Lib Dem, Leeds North West) presented his Criminal Driving (Justice for Victims) Private Members’ Bill in the House of Commons on January 12. It was backed by 31 MPs and will next be heard on March 11.
The MP was spurred into action by the cases of two families in his constituency and dozens more across the UK who feel badly let down by lenient sentences sometimes given to killer drivers.
“I want to pay tribute to the campaigning of families who have lost loved ones due to criminal driving,” said Mr Mulholland. “I want to keep campaigning for better justice for victims of criminal drivers and do all I can to ensure government takes up the measures in my Criminal Driving Bill.
“I also want to thank Brake and its staff for the support they have given to this vital campaign and I look forward to continuing to work with them.”

As a party member I congratulate Greg for his excellent work. As someone who, with my wife , was almost killed by a driver who lost control of her car and came onto the pavement where we were walking , the emotional and physical results of it ,lasting , through the years , I do so very personally . I believe for every accident not anyone s fault , there is one that is . Those in the latter situation need to be aware of the consequences . As with rape and other hideous violent crimes, where I call for greater punishment , my Liberalism is about individual rights and responsibilities too. As Liberals and Democrats we cherish the rule of law and the harm principle , Greg Mulholland is putting it in to practice . Long may we all do so .
Important work and a well deserved award for Greg Mulholland. Around 80 children (plus 1,700 adults) are killed on the roads each year. If 80 children were killed for any other reason we’d regard it as a catastrophe and be determined to do something about it. We should take the same attitude to road deaths, so well done Greg Mulholland for showing some leadership here.
