Recovering from an operation I will be unable to attend Conference in York, but it is good to see debates on Economy, Fracking and Private Renting. Three of the key issues of today, Economy, Environment and Housing.
The private rental debate neglects one key point, the need to drastically reform our planning policies. The excellent article by Simon Jenkins in the Guardian today highlights the shortage of accommodation and the wasted space in urban areas caused by huge spaces lying fallow. Policy should encourage the development of surplus space, not discourage it, playing into the hands of developers who want to make money by building on virgin land.
Encouraging the use of wasted urban space will increase supply, and therefore reduce excessive demand.
