LDV members’ survey (7): party on right track, Clegg wins +41% approval

Over the last week or two, Lib Dem Voice has invited the members of our private forum (open to all Lib Dem members) inviting them to take part in a survey, conducted via Liberty Research, asking a number of questions about the party and the current state of British politics. Many thanks to the 210+ of you who completed it; we’ve been publishing the results on LDV over the past week. Today’s is the final part.

First up, LDV asked: LDV asked: Do you think, as a whole, the Liberal Democrats are on the right course or on the wrong track?

Here’s what you said (with October’s figures in brackets):

The right course: 70% (71%)
The wrong track: 20% (19%)
Don’t know / No opinion: 10% (11%)

The net approval for the general direction of the party among members is little changed: +50% in November, compared with +52% in the immediate afterglow of the party conference. Prior to conference, the net approval rating stood at +32%.

LDV then asked: what is your view of Nick Clegg’s performance as Lib Dem leader?

Here’s what you told us (with October’s figures in brackets):

Very effective 14% (16%)
Fairly effective 56% (58%)
Quite ineffective 24% (21%)
Very ineffective 5% (3%)
Don’t know / No opinion 1% (2%)

In total, then, 70% (74% in October) of LDV-reading party members are satisfied with Nick’s performance, compared with 29% (24%) who are not: a net satisfaction rating of +41%, down a notch compared with last month’s figure of +50%, but still considerably up on his pre-conference approval rating of +31%.

  • Ok, do a poll where people choose who’d do better than Clegg (ok, Vince Cable, but people also said that about Ming Campbell folks!)
Anyway, unless the party does a “Bob Hawke” at the last minute, we’re stuck with him til the next election so people’d better get used to it.
