Lee Jasper: suspended from job as police investigate (updated)

A news release from Brian Paddick’s campaign:

Commenting on the suspension of the Mayor’s Police and Equalities adviser, Lee Jasper, following a police investigation, Liberal Democrat Mayoral candidate, Brian Paddick, said:

“This goes far beyond the allegations made by the Evening Standard, which from my understanding simply suggested that Lee Jasper had broke the rules, not broken the law.

“If it is true that the Mayor has suspended Lee Jasper because of the criminal investigation, then this is a serious escalation of the situation regarding what is one of the Mayor’s personal appointments. It casts serious doubt on the Mayor’s judgement in terms of his selection of advisors.

“You can tell from Ken Livingstone’s demeanour that he is seriously worried by the bad smell that is emanating from his own administration and his own advisors.

“Because of the complexity of the allegations that have been made, it’s unlikely that any of these investigations will be concluded by 1 May. What the voters of London have got to realise is that if they re-elect Ken Livingstone, the chances are they’re in for a nasty shock in the months following the election.”

UPDATE: A quick word about some of the pro-Lee Jasper spin being deployed in response to this news. I particularly love one of the comments posted below, which included this statement: “As far as I understand it Jasper asked for the police to be brought in as the GLA were refusing to give him an opportunity to answer these serious allegations until sometime in March.”

In other words, the defence is: there’s nothing for the police to find, but we’re making them spend time doing an investigation because it’d be unfair for Lee to have to wait a few weeks until he gets the chance to put his case at a GLA meeting.

Well, if that’s what you really believe – isn’t that an extremely poor excuse for wasting police time on an investigation you say you’re 100% sure won’t find anything? Just because Lee Jasper has to wait a few weeks until a GLA meeting? And it’s not as if a GLA meeting is the only place where he can make his case…

  • Brian is the same Lee Jasper who supported you when you were the subject of serious criminal accusations when you were running Lambeth? The man who campaigned to bring you back when you were unfairly moved? As far as I understand it Jasper asked for the police to be brought in as the GLA were refusing to give him an opportunity to answer these serious allegations until sometime in March. Now how is asking to be investigated constitute ‘ a bad smell’ What I can tell by your demeanor is that you have dipped you snout in the political pig swill and are now seeking to fully exploit this racist campaign. Come on Brian you were a police man lets ensure we do a little more objective analysis of the facts before rushing to judgement!

  • Lee Jasper requests Mayor to immediately refer all allegations against him in the Evening Standard to full police investigation
    15-2-2008 098

Lee Jasper has asked the Mayor to refer all allegations made against him by the Evening Standard to the police immediately for thorough investigation.

Lee Jasper said: ‘I am being prevented from clearing my name, black organisations across London are being weakened by a systematic campaign in the Evening Standard from seeking funds, and a deliberate attempt is being made to divert attention from the real issues confronting London at the Mayoral election.

‘This is being done deliberately and consciously – far from seeking clarity the Evening Standard for ten weeks has been running stories of false allegations against me without taking alleged ‘evidence’ to the police. Members of the London Assembly claim they wish to investigate ‘a tide of corruption’ while in fact they have prevented me from testifying before it. They have refused my repeated offers to appear before them to explain my work and disprove these allegations and they are now refusing to hold any hearings until 5th March.

‘The deliberate aim of this delay is not to achieve clarity but to string out a series of unfounded and poisonous allegations in the media and investigation by the police will clear my name and put a stop to this.’

The Mayor said: ‘I want to make completely clear the police have made no approach to me to refer these allegations. We are seeing an attempt at a trial by the media with the London Assembly not merely refusing to scrutinise but also preventing Lee Jasper answering these allegations even when he volunteers to do so and a police investigation will put a stop to this disgraceful political charade.

‘The Evening Standard should immediately take any evidence it claims to have to the police or stop making these false allegations – in the good old phrase put up or shut up.

‘In agreeing Lee’s request I have also made the extremely difficult decision that like any GLA officer subject to a police investigation, Lee Jasper will be suspended pending the outcome of the police investigation.

‘I believe this investigation will exonerate Lee Jasper and show this to be a shameful campaign. As the interests of London are best served by putting an end to this malignant political charade I have concluded that a full police investigation is the most authoritative way to end this story once and for all.’

    gla candidate jonnie of brixton..

  • The London Assembly (note not the GLA) has not refused to see Lee Jasper or another mayoral advisor, John Ross, and get them to answer questions about these allegations. The Assembly will do precisely that on March 5th.

The reason for the delay? Last week the London Development Agency supplied the Assembly with over 50 large lever arch files in 5 crates, not collated and in no sort of order, in response to the Assembly’s request for their papers relating to the allegations that t5eh Standard has made. You can’t have a proper scrutiny until those documents have been gone through and the relevant evidence extracted.

    See http://www.london.gov.uk/view_press_release_a.jsp?releaseid=15695 for more detail.

For what is worth the Assembly have questioned the LDA about these allegations on February 7th. The Mayor and his staff are claiming that the Assembly didn’t invite Mayoral advisors to that meeting and that is true – they wanted to hear what the LDA had to say. On February 13th the Assembly engaged in detailed scrutiny of the Mayor’s budget, exposing for instance that the Mayor of London’s claim to be putting 1000 extra police on the streets is false.

One question readers should ask themselves is why the Mayor and his advisors are so keen to have the Assembly conduct such a quick scrutiny in to their actions? Is it because the more time the Assembly has to examine the evidence, the more difficult it becomes for the Mayor?

  • So lets see…. You are employed in a position of authority and given a megabucks budget to spread a feelgood factor within the black community. When the auditors come along you shrug your shoulders and say that you dont really remember where the money has gone leaving the taxpayers of London hundreds of thousands of pounds out of pocket. To resign in the hope that your incompetence or subject to an investigation criminal fraud will surface is the least you should do. On current form Lee Jasper is not a man to be trusted with a public purse. As for the man who employed him – well if you dont think his ability and judgement is brought into question then you need to go to Specsavers.
