    Fantastic gain in Gateshead too.

I was delighted to see this although I have never met the people involved.

As joint organisers of Sunderland Lib Dems, of which I later became Chair, Phil Hanmer and I started out the Liberal success in Sunderland in 1980 with wins on the Tyne & Wear County Council seats of Bishopwearmouth and Southwick and later several Sunderland MBC seats. Millfield was part of the Sunderland MBC Central Ward in which I stood several times before returning to Lancashire. our longstanding councillor in Central Sunderland (26 years) . Mark Greenfield was never defeated in his ward in a clean fight by Labour – he succumbed to a major re-warding and even then only lost by a handful of votes against the entire Sunderland Labour machine. Mark was my greatest helper this year in winning central Southport – a SLIGHTLY different area to central Sunderland! 🙂
