Wouldn’t it make more sense to have the hustings before the ballot papers are sent out?
Doing that would mean people have more information, which would enable them to make a more informed decision.
This schedule would make it more likely that people make snap decisions which wouldn’t benefit the party or the City of London.
Also, if the schedule does have to be this way, I think the hustings shouldn’t be as close to the deadline for returning ballot papers.
So Brian Haley joined the Lib Dem group in Haringey last January from *Labour*, and already wants to be mayoral candidate? Tells me all I need to know. This party does not exist just to help your career Mr Haley.
I think the previous comment about Brian Haley was unfair. As a party, we need to be encouraging people from all walks of life and experiences to come forward for positions such as this.
I for one, am pleased we have four excellent candidates on the shortlist and look forward to the various hustings.
@ David Morris – hustings late July, ballot deadline a month later. Perhaps you misread the month on the latter item?
@ Jen – Whoops! Yes, I did mis-read the month.
However, I still stand by the rest of my comment.
@ Joseph Lee – I’m all for people from different walks of life and experiences, just not different political parties!
@Bolivia – Vince Cable used to be a Labour councillor, does that make him a selfish careerist, or does that just apply to people you don’ know?
In case you hadn’t noticed, BAME communities are underrepresented in the party, and we don’t have a single MP of colour. I suggest you hear what Brian Haley has to say before writing him off.
Vince Cable did indeed used to be a Labour councillor, but I doubt anyone could argue he has not established his Liberal credentials since joining, many many years ago. And I don’t know Vince Cable, so I’m not quite sure why you applied that distinction.
BAME communities are indeed under-represented in the party, and I am very disappointed there is not a Lib Dem BAME candidate in the short-list (or a female candidate, for that matter). I will of course listen to what Brian Haley has to say, but my only point was that the omens do not look good.
Mr Haley has at last joined the right party and follows in a good tradition – besides Vince Cable and others in the UK, the interim Liberal leader in Canada used to be the New Democrat premier of Ontario.
Brian Haley is a careerist who does not represent the BAME communities but himself and himself alone. I think you only need to check his records as a cllr in Haringey and all his business dealings which remain undisclosed to the public but to the labour group. He is a part of the corrupt elites in labour controlled Haringey. This is a man that says one thing but means something else.
