Party press release:
Newspaper and television journalist, Mark Webster, has been appointed as Senior Media Spokesperson to Menzies Campbell. The new post is the latest step in the modernisation of the Party’s communications capability, which has been underway since Menzies Campbell became Party Leader.
Mark Webster will play a key role in the Party’s strategic communications team and will work hand in hand with Puja Darbari, the Leader’s Press Secretary, Jon Oates, the Director of Policy and Communications and the Party’s new Head of Media, a post which will be appointed shortly.
Mark has over thirty years experience as a newspaper and television journalist. During that time his career has included; political correspondent at Westminster, Leader writer for the Evening Standard, Financial Times journalist, Business and Economics Editor of Independent Television News and Bureau Chief in Russia and Ireland.
Maybe he can help out with the autobiography too. £40k would keep me in Maltesers for a decade.
Liberal Democrat Leader Menzies Campbell said:
“Mark is a highly experienced journalist and I am delighted that he has agreed to join our communications team. He has the perfect experience for this role and I know that he will make a significant contribution to our communications as we prepare for the next general election.”
While ‘five sports programme presenter‘ may not immediately strike you as the perfect experience, apparently he has had a long career in ITN, and before that at the FT.

I’m looking at the photo of our Mark Webster, I’m looking at the photo of Mark Webster on Wikipedia. They look the same to me!
Ah well, can’t win ’em all.
“The new post is the latest step in the modernisation of the Party’s communications capability, which has been underway since Menzies Campbell became Party Leader.”
Erm, I thought it had rather more to do with Mark Littlewood resigning.
Rule number one of spin: don’t try it if you have no chance of getting away with it, or you just end up looking stupid.
Hopefully Mr Webster will get the spinmeisters into better shape.
“Lib dems are thick”
But thank you for further enhancing the reputation of the political blogosphere as and environment where there can be a robust exchange of ideas in an atmosphere of civility, politeness and respect for others
ha ha From a Lib Dem that is class
Okay, before anyone else corrects me – I realise now that this isn’t replacing Mark L’s vacancy, which is yet to be filled. The ‘press meister in chief’ bit confused me.
