Following a consultation, the government has announced its intention to press ahead with proposals to mutualise Post Offices. Here’s what Norman Lamb – who has previously set out his vision for the future of Post Offices here on the Voice – had to say, as reported by the Independent:
Post Office branches are relied upon by communities the length and breadth of the country.
That is why we have committed £1.34 billion of funding to the business and why there will be no closure programme under this Government. I want to make sure that the Post Office becomes a successful and secure business.
This consultation has shown that those who know the Post Office best – its staff, subpostmasters and consumers – have a clear interest in playing a greater role in how it operates.
A mutual Post Office would bring together the diverse interests of those who use, work for and run Post Office branches, with the shared purpose of running the business for the benefit of the public.
I am incredibly excited by the prospect of establishing a mutual Post Office.

The consultation on industrial democracy at the last Lib Dem conference was inspirational. Good to see this is going ahead and the whole party seems to be agreed that we should be doing more of this.
I am glad Norman is excited, you see if you would care to ask subpostmasters, you would find they are not in favour of mutualisation, and the same goes for network transformation. This is all being forced on them.
We need to ensure whoever takes over the Royal Mail does something similar.
Please can you mutualise London’s bus and tube systems?
Mr Lamb, how will all the stake holders eg NS&I, First Rate, Bank of Ireland, Aviva, Mastercard, DVLA, etc etc have their say on how they want the Post Office run and their products promoted
