Norwich North poll date set for 23 July

The BBC has the story:

The date for the Norwich North by-election, triggered by the resignation of Labour MP Ian Gibson, is expected to be set for 23 July. … He had a majority of just over 5,000 at the last election.

The BBC understands that the writ for the election will be moved on Tuesday, with the poll set to be held two days after Parliament breaks up for its summer recess on 21 July.

Clearly Labour wants to get the expected loss of this seat out of the way at the height of summer, when MPs are away and much of the public on holiday, in order to minimise the political embarrassment to Gordon Brown. It’s a risky tactic – Labour’s devastating defeat in Glasgow East on 24th July, 2008, simmered for the whole summer, and almost brought the Prime Minister down during September; only the near-collapse of the world banking system saved him then. What will happen in autumn 2009 to keep him in post?

  • I wonder why the old speaker’s glasgow seat isn’t going up at the same time. Surly they can’t believe all the Scots Lab members are going to head down to east anglia?
