There is a report in the E-Government Bulletin about the campaign organisation WebThrift’s claim that councils are wasting money on web services.
Peter Barton at Lincolnshire County Council turns WebThrift’s claim on its head. He estimates the cost impact of turning the web OFF at the council: click here for details.
What is WebThrift’s real agenda? Who could possibly benefit by the isolation of people from local government?

There seems to be a mentality that tries to imagine that everyone is incompetent with technology, (or in their terms “doesn’t get on” with it) and that those who make use of these servces are a small sliver of geeks and wierdos, when the truth is nearer the point where most people are comfortable using web technology for
Certainly we are at a point where many more people wanting to know something would fire up the PC and go to google or the website of the council or company they want to know about. The numbers who would wander round a neighbourhood office, or pick up the phone must be a vanishingly small minority. It’s a minority that needs to be supported, but must be recognised as a minority. Likewise there is a growing group of people who would struggle if the info was not available on the web, just as much as some would struggle if walk in offices were abolished.
Well I thought these were interesting links.
