We thought you might like to find out a little bit about our new MPs. We didn’t think we’d have quite so many, but this is a lovely problem to have. All details come from the party website or the MPs’ social media. We’ll get to know them more over the next wee while, but here’s a taster.
Our editor sleepily compiled a Twitter list of all our MPs’ accounts she could find. You can follow it here.
Martin Wrigley MP: Newton Abbot
Martin worked in high tech industry for over 30 years and has lived in Teignbridge for over 25 years.
He is a former Mayor of Dawlish and has been involved in local community politics since 2013.
Martin grew up in a Navy family and lived all over the world. Twenty five years ago he brought his young family to live in Dawlish and fell in love with the area.
Martin said “I want to make sure that that people locally have a good home they can afford and a good future.
We must look after the environment and the beautiful area in which we live as well as build a flourishing economy and a caring society.”

Ben Maguire MP: North Cornwall
Born in Treliske, 32 year old Ben grew up in Withiel near Wadebridge and went to school in Bodmin where his mother was a teacher and his father a GP.
After graduating, Ben worked as a Parliamentary aide and constituency caseworker to former Lib Dem MPs Dan Rogerson and later Ian Swales. He also took research placements in the Hong Kong Legislative Council and the United States Senate.
More recently, Ben has worked as a solicitor in top international law firms and in the microchip industry.

Ian Roome MP: North Devon
Ian Roome lives in Pilton, Barnstaple. He has two daughters and one grandson. He grew up in the Sheffield but moved to North Devon 36 years ago while serving in the Royal Air Force, serving both in the UK and overseas.
After completing his time in the RAF Ian has worked in acute and community mental health services, social housing management and leads a charity fundraising for various projects to support the NHS. His achievements include leading various fundraising campaigns to raise over £7m for NHS facilities particularly cancer services at North Devon District Hospital. He is a local champion and volunteers for various charities as well as being a local Liberal Democrat councillor.
Now Ian is Leader of North Devon Council and the head the Royal Devon Hospitals Charity. His charity fundraising work was instrumental in the creation of the Seamoor Unit and Fern Centre at North Devon District Hospital.
Ian’s top priorities for Devon are: cutting waiting times for GPs, ambulances and operations; getting a fairer deal for Devon’s farmers and ending the sewage scandal polluting our beaches. Dentist provision in North Devon needs addressing too with many in the constituency unable to get an appointment.

Roz Savage: South Cotswolds
Roz has taken on global challenges – and succeeded. She is the first woman to row single-handedly across three oceans, the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian, in order to raise awareness of environmental issues.
Roz has been recognised by the UN for her tireless commitment to fighting climate change. The energy and determination that has propelled Roz around the world against the odds now fuels her drive to get a better deal for people here at home in the Cotswolds.
Roz is working to ensure local people can get access to the healthcare they need when they need it, and that people here – who are working hard and doing their best – don’t have to struggle to pay their mortgage or for their weekly shop.
Caroline Voaden MP: South Devon
Caroline Voaden is the former CEO of Devon Rape Crisis and served as a Member of the European Parliament from 2019-2020. She was the last leader of the Liberal Democrat party in Europe.
She lives in Totnes with her husband Stuart and her two grown-up daughters now live in London.
Caroline was a Reuters journalist, worked as a freelance editor and later ran her own business in Totnes.
Her work as a journalist led her to live in six European countries and she speaks several languages. Caroline worked in both English and French in the European Parliament.
At 34, Caroline was widowed with two very young children when her first husband Nick died of oesophageal cancer. She joined and was later elected chair of a national charity that supports young widowed men and women. She wrote a book about her experience, ‘If There’s Anything I Can Do…’
Caroline is looking forward to using her experience of international journalism, local business and the third sector to the role of MP for South Devon.
She is interested in championing better mental health services, particularly for young people, and addressing the desperate issue of affordable housing in South Devon, one of the areas of the UK most blighted by second homes and holiday lets.

One Comment
There are still a few new MPs who don’t seem to appear on the profile lists here yet. Appreciate with the unexpected editions, it’s a lot more work than normal for the editorial team, but looking forward to hearing about our new Welsh MP and the first LD gain declared for example.
