Richard Livsey dies

Richard Livsey – Lord Livsey of Talgarth, former Brecon and Radnorshire MP and former Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats, died peacefully at home on Wednesday night aged 75.

Kirsty Williams AM, the current leader of the Welsh Lib Dems, has paid tribute to Lord Livsey.

Richard Livsey was a man of immense honour and decency who was loved and respected by his constituents, colleagues and by politicians of all parties.

He will be remembered particularly as a champion for the rural communities in which he lived and an expert on agriculture, which he worked in all his professional life.

Nick Clegg has also issued a statement:

Richard was a kind and thoughtful man who was respected by both constituents and colleagues of all parties.

“He was a highly regarded member of the House Lords – a passionate Welshman who fought for his ideals all his life.

“He was a true Liberal and a compassionate voice for Wales.”

I am shocked and distressed that Richard has died – too soon. He’s been in the Lords since 2001 and we have all benefited from his quiet, dogged promotion of Liberalism, rural affairs and farming, and Wales. Richard was a wonderful friend and a committed radical Liberal. He gave up his spokesmanships about two years ago due to weakening health and particularly having to give more time to his wife Rene but he never stopped pursuing and promoting his interests and supporting the rest of us.

  • I join with Tony in expressing great sadness at Richard’s very unexpected passing. A great friend of Wales, especially rural Wales, a thoroughgoing Liberal in good times and bad and a remarkable personal friend to many people.
RICHARD’S FUNERAL IS AT TALGARTH CHURCH at 1 pm on SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 25th.

This is very sad news indeed. I worked full-time for Richard in the 1985 by-election when he was first elected. He was a very kind, gentle, unassuming man who impressed all who met him with his honesty and integrity, the kind of man who you feel proud to have known.

  • Dyma golli gwleidydd arbenning iawn, iawn. Gwr hoffus, gonest a didwyll yn ei fywyd preifat yn ogystal ag yn ei fywyd cyhoeddus. Mae marwolaeth Richard Livsey yn golled aruthrol i’w deulu annwyl ac hefyd i genedl y Cymru. Gorffwys mewn hedd ar ol bywyd llewyrchys a gyfoethogodd bywyd llawer un..
